Strange engine behaviors, some ???s LONG

Well I have had the car since Saturday. Well on Sunday I noticed the clicking sound, but I can deal with that. On Monday going down the road, I noticed the gas mileage sucks. I drive 75 miles each way to work. On the first tank I averaged 22 mpg using 93 octane. So I plan on doing some maintenance this weekend, spark plugs, fuel filter, air filter, oil change/filter, throttle body cleaning, and probably O2 sensors. Ok, now on two occaisions while driving with cruise on I have felt almost like a knock, the engine would stumble like maybe the gas was cut from the engine and then kick right back in. A jerking sensation but only happened for one second and then everything back to normal. It also seems like the acceleration is poor in the car as well. I have never driven a SE 5spd but I would think 190hp would pull harder. Any suggestions, overall I enjoy the car but the gas mileage needs to improve, one of the reasons I bought the car.

TIA,

Henri

Hi!

General maintence is always good , actually for a majority of the parts you will want to talk with Internetautomar, he sells parts at great prices.
-Spark plugs: they come factory with NGK platinums, but if you dont want to pay the for them, you can run coppers (I am). The only difference is the life of the plug.
For platinum- NGK #PFR5C-11
For copper- NGK #BKR5E-11
-Air Filter: Personally I'd recommend buying a K&N cone filter because they are reuseable and tend to add a few extra ponies, but Paper elements are cheap, its totally up to you.
-Oil Change: Either Synthetic or Conventional, your call. But for the Filter I highly recommend using the Napa Gold #1361 filter. Its under $6 and one of the highest quality ones. Heck buy a few and decorate your house with them
-Fuel Filter: there was a thread just recently talking about these. I'd get the Bosch or OEM from Internetautomar. You can also use a 300zx filter if you like.
-O2 Sensor: I'd definetly buy this from Internetautomar, there is only one for our car, could be the reason your getting bad mileage, never hurt anyone to replace it.
-Throttle Body cleaning- probably wont fix anything, but it can get you better throttle response. I took my TB off and cleaned it then just used some gasket sealer I have and reinstalled it.

Also might want to make sure your cat is working properly. Also search for threads on the resistor for the knock sensor, that will tell you if its bad, and could be the cause for your lack of power and small studders. Also look for advancing your timing, I noticed my car pulled harder after doing that.

Welcome aboard!

Hmm...If you are just seeing the jerking problem when using the cruise control then it could just be that the cruise is not staying engaged as it should...not sure, though.
As far as gas mileage goes, I wouldn't expect a whole lot more than 22..I don't think Maximas are necessarily known for having the greatest gas mileage. But with a VE 5sp, I don't think I'd mind!

Got those

Got bosch, Wix, Fram, generic, But no OE yet

Got that, only one on the car, can kill gas mileage well before it sets of SES light

Gas mileage I can't comment on but that was the reason I decided to keep rather than sell my max.

Thanks for the info, I guess it would be no fun if something wasn't wrong.

I average 23 with my 540i, that includes city driving. The Max has to better than 22 highway!

too earily for math, but I can do 400 tank combo city and highway, semi agressive, refilling just after the 1/4 tank left mark. I also have the lightened flywheel so I dont know how much that is affecting it.

I'm assuming that after the tuneup you will notice it pulling alittle harder or smoother, probably alot better gas mileage. The timing advance and resistor for the knock sensor will make it pull alot harder (or atleast it did for me).

Well, edmonds.com lists the economy at 21 city, 26 hwy for the 93 SE 5sp...so, you could maybe expect to get that much- also depends alot on your driving habits, tho. Like these guys said, a good tune up should help you get the max out of your max, so to speak...

oops. Bosch or Wix, I'd stay away from the Fram, and seek internetautomar's advice about the generic.

if your car is fast when when you first start driving it in the morning and then it gets progressivly slower its your knock sensor and you can replace it or install a resistor to trick the ecu to thinking every things ok, and as far as gas milage goes my 92 5spd with a jdm engine that ive put about 1k miles on and in top running condition gets about 280-300 per tank proboly 200 of that is highway and 50% aggressive so anything around there is proboly not to bad
