Do I need a new tranny?

This is for a SOHC '92 maxima. Before I go and buy a new auto tranny, I want to be absolutely positive I need one. The engine sounds great, and revs fine. The car won't go over maybe 5 mph, though the revs climb. It goes in reverse just fine. I replaced the tranny fluid, but it doesn't act any differently. Anything else I should try?

I bought this car for $400, realizing the good resale value of this car in working condition, and the car's potential. I can't wait to get it moving, as the engine sounds strong.

Thanks,
Patrick

Bye Bye Trans.
You'll still be in good shape even if you put a trans in.
Now would However be a good time to swap in a stick

New transmission is in order.

Others may suggest you get the auto rebuilt. I'm going to suggest you to convert it to a 5spd. It'll be a fun car to drive then. Especially since your car is red .

From what I understand from the Haynes manual, I cannot change the filter. I don't plan to switch to 5-speed, because I pretty much want to keep this car stock. It will be my daily driver while I am working on my RX-7, which I've designated my project car. Also, I might sell this car, so I'd like it to not be down for more than necessary. Guess it looks like I'll be doing a tranny swap!

Anyone have a leftover tranny from a 5-speed swap?

what is the difficulty of doing a 5spd swap, compared to swapping out the auto tranny? what's the cost comparison? downsides?

I guess I might be able to find this elsewhere in the forum, but I might as well use my thread. Call me a lazy ***.

Where are you in Florida? I am near Cocoa, Merritt Island. I know where you can get a parts car with a 5 spd tranny for about 200 bucks. I think it is a 90 or 91 SE with the VG engine. Timing belt went and did some damage. At least that is what the mechanic said. I was looking at it to see if he wanted my VE engine but no match obviously.

I've serviced a VE Auto before, it was after a friend put my old engine and tranny into his car. He might have used the wrong kind of fluid to refill it, but a week after the swap we went to look at my mustang before I bought it and about a mile away from home the car started slipping really badly. it would also try and stall. Didnt make any sense, so off goes the pan, a trip down to Napa to pick up a filter and 20mins later we had new fluid, new filter, and cleaned magnets, oh, and the tranny was acting the way it it was when it was in my car.... normal. The old filter was really worn out btw.

the maxs take a "highly friction modified" trans fluid BTW.
Or an additive to make it equivelant
Such as those from lubegard or ATP ( I carry both)

I think I just going to replace it with another AT. From what models/year will a tranny fit my car? I'm shopping, and see some promising options, but don't want to end up with something that won't fit.

Also, at what mileage should I not consider? I mean, what's the highest miles on a transmission before it's positively going to fail?

they typicaly take a dump between 100k and 150k so definitly dont buy one with over 100k i wouldnt personly get anyhting over 50k but it depends on how long or how many miles you are going to keep the car

you can get an auto tranny out of any 89-94 gxe with vg engine and 89-91 se with vg engine

VE/VQ yes and yes.
there is a internal "screen" that filters the ATF..but that's buried in the tranny.

the poster has a VG - RE4F02A. check yo facts senor Gone.

+1 to Danny on the filter. VG auto has one (screen), but buried- "not user serviceable".. In terms of other auto trannies, a 90-92 Nissan Stanza will also work. Uses the same RE4F02A.
