Gas Mileage

Sorry for the stupid question but i cant search so hear it goes.

I just got my 92 SE 5spd about 6 weeks ago and I was wondering what kind of gas mileage I should be getting. I changed the Fuel filter, air filter, NGK Plat Plugs. I cleaned out the TB and am using 10w40 oil. I use 93 octane and I get about 200 miles for a full tank.

I wanted to know if this is normal or should I be getting alot more and what do some of you guys get? Its a combo of highway and street. I shift at about 2500 - 3000 rpms.

The only thing i have not changed yet is the PCV Valve because I cannot find it.

Any help would be great!!!!!!!!1

i have a gxe auto, and i filled up today after doing about 320 miles

you should get around 280-300 with a 5spd. there is gonna be something wrong with something, cant really help with that. but even living in brooklyn you should get at least 250 if you drive in gridlock.

oh and i use 89 octane,

try running some techron through. itll help clean the fuel lines and injectors.

I have a 94se and i usually get about 300 miles to the tank, or about 19 - 20 mpg. Sounds like you might want to check out your 02 sensor.

I have ran 2 bottles of Lucas Fuel injector cleaner when i first got the car. I was going to try something called Seafoam to clean out the carbon in the motor. Has anyone ever heard of this or maybe have a different method?

O2 sensor is also 3 weeks old.

steam cleaning the engine works waaaay better then seafoam. IIRC, take a mason jar of water and put a vacuum hose in it.. letting it sip off the top. Don't plug it in there, just let it sip.

oh, and it's better for the cat if you unbolt the exhaust from the y-pipe.... no carbon buildup clogging the cat

From what I've heard from other org members you should be shifting at higher RPM to save wear and tear. I would double check, not sure since I have an auto.

there was a post bout this for cleaning the throttle body, it was only about a week or so ago, try goin back through there. techron is the most recommended fuel additive and it supposed to work best, i havent used any yet but i have used some stp injector additive and it gave like 50 extra miles, im actually gonna look for some seafoam and do mine.

I dont think shifting at a higher RPM would give me better gas mileage.

This is driving me crazy. I am going to try the seafoam or steam cleaning this weekend. Any other help would be great.

Thanks for all the info so far.

try checking ur injectors, did you make sure that youre plugs were the rit kind? try your o2 sensor, that can make the engine run rich if you have a bad one.

Do you have any other problems??? (ie: hesitation, stalling, rough idle.)

O2 sensor is new and i made sure the plugs were the correct ones. I dont think the PCV valve would do this. Maybe after I clean out the carbon deposits it will get better.

The car runs great. No other problems.

yeah 200 miles is low for a full tank. i would also check fuel filter, tire pressure (make sure it's up to spec), and fuel filter. go easy on that fuel injector cleaner stuff. those harsh chemicals can eat away the injectors which may cause you to run rich.

I was wondering is the timing adjustable on my motor and would that make my gas mileage suffer? The fuel filter is new. Maybe I will try that tectron cleaner. Lets see what happens after the seafoam treatment.

Crazymaxima had a problem with using too much fuel cleaner and it cost him quite a bit in repairs.

timing can be advanced on both the ve and vg, i doubt it needs the advance, but id also get that checked. what gas are you using, ghetto gas or like shell gas.

check your tank and lines for leaks. do you ever notice a fuel smell?

i only use amacco gas 93 octane. and i have no gas smells. This is driving me crazy. The car only has 74k on it and the gas mileage should be much better. Would the PCV valve do this? It is the only thing I have not changed yet.

sounds stupid...but are you hard on your engine? reducing the weight of your foot greatly improves gas milage

i have a 92 5spd. before my speedometer and odometer went south, i knew i was getting at least 330 mpg city. i'm pretty sure i'm getting about the same, if not more.

i would say try the timing, tire pressure, PCV.

btw, did you reset your ECU after you changed plugs (and other stuff)? this is a long shot, since your problem is just baffling!

I have a feeling if I let my Mom drive my car for a gas tank, she would get ~500 miles out of it, and I havent replaced my PCV or fuel filter. Paper element, stock wheels, etc. Maybe its the fidanza?
She would do about 60/40 highway city.

Have you noticed a lack of power on acceleration? I was getting poor fuel mileage and a lack of power, and my knock sensor was bad, retarding my timing. I was getting around 210mi per fill up. After replacing the KS with the resistor, I am back up to 300mi per fill up, now using 92 octane gas. How many miles on the engine?

The car only has 74k on it. I put the car on a computer and it didnt throw any codes. Is 92 octane to high? Should I be using regular gas? I still have not changed the PCV yet. But i dont think that would make me lose 100+ miles per tank. I dont drive hard at all.

If the knock sensor was bad wouldnt it throw a code?

I just got the car so I dont know how much power it should have.

Has anyone else had this problem and fixed it?

Yes the knock sensor usually does throw a code. I had mine replaced about 8 months ago.

off the topic of this thread, but if anyone has a randalls gas station near them, dont buy gas there again. i used their 89 oct, and i have been having the strangest idling, at first i thought someone had been messing around with my tank, but it has the lock on it. im also gettin bad mileage with it too. im just hoping it hasnt damaged my injectors.

now back on topic, i know if i drive good without a lead foot i get about 350 a tank, but im only about to get 220

I ALWAYS fill up with 93 Octane, and I get about 300 miles to the tank. So I don't think its the gas.

I have no idea what it can be. the only thing left to change it the pcv and i dont think i would lose 100+ miles per tank.

My last hope it the carbon removal and then i have no idea what to do. PLease more help is needed!!!!!!

I used to get horrible gas milages like 200-230 pertank, then when I replaced the engine it went up alittle but heres what got it good again

new O2 sensor
new breather hose for gas tank
advanced ignition timing to 20º
my tire pessure was low last week and when I corrected it went up almost 20 miles per tank

Id say I get 340-360 per tank now with 93 all the time. keep in mind only about 150 miles of that is highway and Im ussually doing like 70-80 on the expressway so Im sure that doesnt help much, and the rest is stop and go city driving.

maybe you have something stuck in your tank. there was aguy in houston who had a yukon or something and he noticed a gas problem, turns out he had two pounds of w33d in there.

have you driven a full tank until the gas light comes on? the gauge just might be bad.

The O2 sensor is new. Tire pressure is good. I dont think at 74k i need a new engine. I drive until about 1/8th is left but the light dont come on. Maybe the bulb is out. But i get 200 for a full tank and i know i should be getting about 300-350.

The weird thing is the car idles great. Runs good too. I cant tell if im lossing power because i only have the car 6 weeks and its been like this from day one.

The carbon removal i was talking about is the one i run through a vac hose not the injectors.

What should my timing be at for the best mileage? I guess I can check that tomorrow.
How do i adjust it on my car?

Check the stickys at the top of this forum. There is a link to a chiltons online repair book that tell how to check and adjust the timing. Good find, on a 92 with 74k, must be nice. I would also, calculate and see what your mpg is. Harrymay is right, your gague might be bad, I usually drive an extra 20 to 30 miles with the gas light on, but I've calculated my MPG at about 19.5 to 20.5, just depends on the day. I'm really trying to figure out how I can get into that 25mpg range also (400 + a tank) like others have said.

When does the light come on? I dont want to run out of gas. I will let it go as low as possible. But i might need help pushing. I dont think the gauge is broke it cost me the same $25-$26 to fill up when i do.

Thats cool, but pay attention to how many gallons you are filling up with. It usually takes me about 15.6 gallons to fill up .(We have an 18 gallon tank, but you want use that much. Usually 2 gallons or so are left in transit to the engine)

This way you can start calculating you mpg.
