foward in neutral

So I went to move my Maxima today, I bought it for 400 dollars knowing that it needed transmission work but it may not be as bad as I thought it was. Turns out reverse doesn't work at all, in neutral the car will creep foward but if I give it gas it won't accelarate. Has anyone run into this before? And does it mean that I need a new/ rebuilt tranny or is there a linkage problem that can be fixed easier then a rebuild. Thanks for any help you can give. I have a 94 GXE auto of course.

Just get a new tranny or get your old one rebuilt and you're good to go. Welcome to the Org!!

It may be as simple as a switch misaligned, but I wouldn't count on it.

I was always taught to never buy a car with an engine or tranny problem. You should follow that advice. Only buy if you have the money for a new one.

well I only payed 400 for it, local auction, and the rest of the car is in great shape so if I really wanted to sell it I should be able to turn a profit.

I'd rather buy a car with a bad motor than one with major damage

its probably shift linkage if it wont go in reverse and will go in nuetral. i had a similar problem with my truck, the guy at the tranny shop said that it was a shift problem that can be fixed, i ended up having the engine rebuilt coz the 3rd gear was stipped
