windshield wipers stopped working

So I took my newly purchased 91 SE with 141k miles to NC from NJ and back this weekend. The round trip was 1,300 miles. The day I headed back, it was raining all day so I had the wipers on the whole time literally, but not continious. So my last 20 miles to my house, the wipers just stick in the up position and can't figure out why they just stopped after I hear the motor still going in its intervals. I pull over and push em down and pull em up with the motor going and they just flap in the wind basically. Can anyone help me tell me how to fix this problem or what went wrong?

sound like the spline between the base of the wiper and the rod of the wiper are worn. Unscrew the nut and check the connection. If the teeth on the wiper is worn, pick up another one in the junk yard. You can get all of them from the junk yard.

If the wipers still move together but motor doesn't move them, it sounds like the connection near the wiper motor has popped off. You'll have to unscrew the cowl cover to see anything. Popping it back on or replacing one of the levers in this area should fix it, as the thing uses plastic bushings. Just popping it back on may leave possibility of future breakdown though.

It sounds like both wipers stopped working so if this is the case it shouldn't be loose nuts or bad splines as they wouldn't both go bad together.

My mom had this problem with her old 88 Jetta a the screws on her wiper arms were stripped. We just had to replace the arms with new ones.
