Heater only blows on #4

Hi experts. It's freezing in Iowa and I'm tired of having no heat or a whirling inferno. For some reason my heater only blows on the highest setting. Does anyone know why?

Also, whats with the vertical lever that supposedly changes fresh air circulation (I think)? Mine doesn't seem to do anything. It's like is always wide open, and when I move it, it feels loose... like it isn't connected to anything.

Thanks in advance for your knowledge.

Chris

it's your low speed fan relay. It controls all speeds but high. It should be be behind a panel underneath the steering wheel.

My heater doesn't work on anything but 2 and 3. It doesn't even blow hot air. SO my father had the heating core flushed, new radiator fluid, and had the heater coils replaced. Nothing new happened. So he went to the Nissan dealership and they put the car in diagnostics and the electrical panel behind the dash is faulty. So I am replacing that tomorrow. Hopefully that works.

Blower motor resistor is the more common term for the part that controls speeds 1 - 3
Hi is controled usually by the "Hi Blower relay"
Cass- I suggest pulling blower switch and checking for continuity first because that may be where your problem lies

Thanks so much for the info about the low speed relay. Does anyone happen to know the part number I'd need to order one? ... and who here sells nissan parts, etc.? I tell ya this group is so useful --- Thanks again.

If nothing happens when you turn on the fan, then your fan relay is bad. It's located behind the right side kick panel - blue relay (part number 25230-C9980 or 25230-C9970, about $14 from nissanparts.cc).

Pull a relay (from something not important - like fog lights) from one of the relay boxes under your hood for a blue one and swap it in place of your current fan relay to see what happens.

If only speed 4 works, it's the resistor assy (part 27150-85E00, about $16 from nissanparts.cc) located behind the glove box.

You need a new resistor assy which is located behind the glove box (controls speeds 1-3).

If no fan speeds worked, it would be the fan relay located in the right side kick panel (blue relay).

The fresh air cable is connected to a valve under the right dash next to the console. Hard to see and a real pain in the a... to connect. There should be a small metal clip that is used to hold the cable in place and prevents it from moving when the level is moved from open to closed. Sounds like your's came loose/off in the open position and is blowing cold air when you don't want it!

Tim, Thanks for your input. I'm just wondering if anyone can confirm this since it seems there is a difference of opinion.

This is what I'm understanding so far....

resistor assy = controls speeds 1-3
fan relay = replace if no speeds work

correct? any other input?

Thanks. Chris.

The resistor is the part that is broken. The resistor
works like this the fan switch sends power through
different coils in the resistor to regulate the voltage going to the fan motor which is were the
different speeds come from. 1-3 go through the
resistor #4 is 12 volts and bypasses the resistor.
Also check the fan motor a bad motor can wipe out a good resistor.

Is the above information true for both the manual climate control and the automatic climate control? My GXE has the automatic climate control and only moves air on the highest setting, either manually selected, or in auto mode it figures out that lower speeds aren't working and eventually selects highest speed. A mechanic once told me that it was the electronic display/control problem, but is it actually these resistors mentioned above? Thanks.
