tranny f*ing up only in second
my tranny refuses to shoft into third out of second. I have no problems in any other gears. It goes up to 5gs and keeps going almost to six and will not change unless you take your foot off the gas so much you are just barely toughing it. And if you dont do that and keep going i can hit past redline, something i dont ever wanna do cause i want my car to live as long as possible. Also if i hold it at whereever the gas is to make it about 5 to 5,500, it will go down slowly and then shift. whats up with this?? can anyone help me. I don't understand whats going on! grrr.
thanks

Had similar problem & still trying to figure out whether it's the tranny, tranny ecu, engine ecu or combination that's causing the problem. Although I've done some work, It's still a minor problem after city driving for 30 mins or more & moderate use of the gas pedal.
- I've replaced the valve body, changed the tranny oil & adjusted the brake band & that's fixed most of the shift problem. Note that adjusting brake band def made 1-2 & 2-3 shift snappier and less "flared".
- when it happens (usually going uphill on a freeway on-ramp), I can either take foot off gas pedal until it changes up or switch O/D button off & it normally shifts up okay. Once tranny is in 3rd, switch O/D back on & all okay.
- am going to install aftermarket oil cooler to relieve heatsoak as know heat def a factor. New Zealand climate is predominantly temperate so winter temperatures not an issue with tranny running too cool.
To adjust brake band in tranny, try & get hold of Haynes U11 Stanza/Bluebird Manual (UK) which describes in detail how it's done - not too difficult although you'll need a torque wrench in inch-pounds, not foot-pounds (Stanza used same tranny).
What type of Pulsar do you own & how did you get to own it in the US? I'm taking it's the N14 model & probably the hot GTiR (Son of Godzilla).
In countries like Japan, NZ, Australia & UK, Pulsar/Sunny are Nissan's bread & butter. Here they were badged as Sentra for a while as sedans & 3 doors were Sunny's & sportswagon was Pulsar (87 - 91) - now they're all Pulsar's & badged as Pulsar's. In Australia they were rebadged as Holden Nova for a year or two in mid-80's (as were Toyota Corolla's in 1987).
If you're unsure of the name Holden, it's GM's Aussie arm & builds the 2004 Pontiac GTO for export to the US! Also sells it's rear drive Commodore range as Chevy Lumina in Middle East...
Most US Sentra's are JDM Sunny which shares same floorpan & mechanics of Pulsar but slightly larger & boxier body shape (for the middle American conservative types). Used to own a 1984 Nissan EXA turbo - known as Pulsar/NX in the States (N12 model). The 3rd gen NX1600/2000 was based on JDM Sunny - B13 model & not Pulsar floorpan (more useless trivia...).
Hope some of this helps & now you know a little about the Pulsar name
