time to replace my tranny?

I have a 92SE auto. Previously the car couldn't move until I put the drive shaft to 2 first and then to D. I asked in this board and got reply that the selector-to-cable bush was likely worn out. I took it to the mechanic, but he said he won't bother because it was not necessary to fix(and the bottom of my car is rusted and not easy to open). The only thing I need to do is to remember to put drive shaft to 2 first. I believed him and left.
Ok, now the the problem seems strange. Sometimes I cannot feel the accelaration, even the engine speed is very high. When this happens, I move the drive shaft back and forth, so I can feel the acceration again if I hit the right position. It is very annoying. I checked the fluid in the tranny, it is good.
Is it the problem of worn-out selector-to-cable bush or a bad tranny?

I'd change the bushing first..that might be all that is wrong with it..I assume you're talking about the auto shifter and not the driveshaft, since our cars don't exactly have a driveshaft..

you shouldn't have to change the shifter, I'm not sure where the bushing is, but if its where I think it is, I can probably tell you somtime from Wednsday-Friday, depending on when I get my new headunit and have the console apart..hopefully by then somone else who knows off the top of their head will drop in and tell you

Sounds like shifter bush probably non-existant - it's a plastic bush that falls apart with age.

Jack up the front of your car & put it on axle stands. Crawl under & where the exhaust runs down the center of the car, you'll see a couple of heat shields. You'll need a 10mm socket & wrench.
Undue the five bolts from the front heat shield and slide it around the center muffler until you can see the bottom of the tranny shifter.
Where the tranny shifter connects to the cable is where the suspect bush should be - if its as bad as you describe, the bush should have disintegrated!
Remove the split pin & washer that locates the cable to the shifter & replace bush. Refit pin, washer and heat shield.

Badabing - should take 15-20mins tops (or 5mins if you've done this a few times ).

Thank you for your info! I hope I have a garage so that I can do it myself. Just for fun.
