new alternator?

well it turns out why i've been having battery problems is because it turns out my alternator cant hold a good charge anymore. I have the option of getting it rebuilt for $100 or buying a new one for $275.... i am on a budget so does anyone have an experiences with the rebuilt? if so.. is it worth it?

i buy the remanufactured pieces of junk from autozone. they only cost 70 something dollars. its hard finding a good one but there are some out there. the good side to buying these is they come with a lifetime warranty so if it ever fails bring it back and they'll give you a new one.

be absolutely sure to get it tested right out of the box if you go that route. i've had a few that were junk right out of the box.

sounds like a crappy way to go but its the cheapest way if you are looking to save money.

Yep, that Autozone/Advanced Auto/PepBoy lifetime guarantee only guarantees a lifetime of changing parts when it comes to electrical stuff.

Get a good rebuild from NAPA or Internetautomar (on this board) or take it to a local shop and have it rebuilt.

Whenever it comes to buying an alternator its always a hit or miss. Even if you buy a new one they can go out just as fast, i've gone through two on my Maxima and one when I had my Eclipse.
Just lift it to the heavens and pray over it before you put it on.

best thing just do the pepboys, autozone thing lifetime warranty.. U got to remember though that they dont fully overhaul the alternator they just fix the part that was broken, which is generally the brushes. you can do either get ya old one re-wound with more brushes to give u a higher amperage so u can keep up with ya demand. Are you running audio in the car? Like amps n all?? If so better work on making sure u dont reach the alternators voltage potential and burn it out again!!

The best thing is to get a QUALITY rebuilt or new unit. not one these B.S. lifetime warranty units which as you stated they only replace the failed piece.

Better rebuilts will have the voltage regulator replaced, and stator rewound.

Of course a new unit does have as much to worry about.

From what I hear Maxima's are famous for having problems with their alternators. So I guess we are just experiencing hardships of owning Maxima's.
