What should my idle speed be?
What should my idle speed be?
Can some one with the FSM tell me what should my idle speed set at? It's running at 1000 RPM when the engine is warm up and in Park or Neutral. My engine is VG30E 3.0L SOHC on a 91 Maxima GXE. Many thanks. Also if you have the procedure to adjust the idle speed on this engine, please post it.

I looked under the hood and it said 'No idle adjustment needed'. Should I assume 950 RPM at Idle (with no load, i.e. head lights off) in Park for my Automatic Trans VG30E engine? Thanks in advance for your help.
By the way, there are lots of information on the stickers under the hood that I've not noticed before.

Rpm too low in 93 GXE
Hi,
I have a rough idle in my 93 maxima GXE, with 120 K miles on it. the car idles rough only in Drive or Reverse. As soon as I change to Park or Neutral, it becomes smooth again. When in motion, i.e. when the accelerator is pressed even a little bit, the roughness goes away. The rpm when the car is cold is >1000 both in Drive and Neutral. Its not rough then. When its heated up nicely, the Drive idle rpm is 600 and Neutral idle rpm is 700.
I had 2 injectors replaced last August, and the engine does not miss at all. The pickup is what you'd expect from a nissan v-6, albeit slightly on the slower side due to the heavy mileage on the car. I use an injector cleaner every 4-5K miles. I had a tune-up last August when the spark plugs were replaced, but probably not the wires.
A mechanic told me yesterday, that the idle rpm in Drive and Reverse is too low, that it should be slightly higher, and that if it were, the car would be smooth when idling.
From what you guys seem to concur, I think my rpm is too low when the car is heated up. How do I adjust it? I'm a complete novice at car repair...so is it simple enough t odo myself, or should I go to a service shop, or should I just go to the dealer?

I think the rough idle when your car is in Drive or Reverse could cause by the montor mounts. With older car, my is 91 max with 200K, the rubbers are worn and transmit the vibration from the engine and transmition to the body of the car. I have the same exact problem as you've described and a local mechanic had informed me about the crumble motor mounts. The cost to replace is arond $250 parts and labor so I put a hold on that for now.
yup, I did a complete top end rebuild this summer on my GXE and I KNOW it is running correctly. But I too have this vibration in gear. The only thing I can attribute it to is the mounts. Maybe tranny and not engine, but I guess both could be at fault.
