Engine problems

I just purchased a 92SE and it has a problem durring acceleration. This is compleatly random and not repeatable, but only happens during load (acceleration). The engine basicaly stops firing all cyls, not just one for a split second, comes back on, then dies again, this keeps studdering like this untill I either floor it or let off. It feals too quick to be a fuel pressure problem, and too extream to be just one coil or injector failing. I am thinking it might be the power transistor or the ECU. Anyone have any clue? I am a good mechanic, but I realy only work on V8s and things with freakin DISTRIBUTORS!!! this coil on plug thing is a pain in the a$$.

You mean it is possible for ALL of the coil packs to go on a maxima at the exact same time at compleatly random times? This is not a hesitation, this is a complete engine shutdown for a split second. If it happens at low RPM, the engine has stalled. I have never seen a motor that could not at least run crappy on a few misfiring cylenders.

Sounds like a MAF problem. Unplug it and make sure the connections are tight/clean. Then take off the accordian intake tube and see if the maf hotwire is clean.

I have the same car (92 SE) and same problem.
the 'engine shut down' can last 3-4 secs and then it might alternate
quicly between on/off/on/off/on before going back to normal.
One think I noticed is that pushing gas pedal will makes it worse (longer to recover).

Please help

I have unplugged the MAF and driven it in the "limp mode" it has given the same problem though.

I also just replaced the fuel pump and strainer, that didnt help either.

Did you guys look over your coil packs?

Usually one or more of them will have cracks along the plastic and often times that's what is causing this problem (like subs1000 was saying). I have also talked to a Nissan tech and he told me to NOT run Bosch spark plugs, as they can cause this type of behavior, too. Stick with OEM NGK plugs.

Like subs also said, there are different remedies. I have also read where the cam sensor is faulty and causes the same type of behavior and also where guys have replaced the MAF and it solved it, although it seems like the MAF is more of a problem with the VG engine.
