Power Steering Failure???
#1
Just curious how many of you have had problems with your power steering. Mine right now is messed up and is going in to the shop on Monday to be checked for further problems. Its a 92 SE with 144,000 on it. Anyone else have any problems, if so, what was the total $$damage$$ to fix it? Thanks everyone!

pwer sterring
i replaced the pump at 90k it was expensive i think it was like 200 bucks rebuilt and a new on was like 500.... very easy job to do but u need a pulley puller to make ur life easy dont use a pry bar the pulley will warp.... why i know cause i thought it was hard enough so i used one and warped it.... time wise about 2 hrs... now if its not ur pum it may be ur rack and pinion.... big money unless it rebuilt and u most definatley have to have it aligned when its done

Power steering pump leaks
I don't have the problem with my pump you describe, but my pump is leaking, and the dealer told me $400 to replace/repair. However, I'm trying some power steering fluid stop leak first. Problem is that only small amounts leak daily, so it's going to take a while to have the system full of the stop leak additive.
I'm not touching mine until I'm sure this stuff won't fix it. Obviously, the pump is still pumping, and I've had bad power steering on other car before, it makes a gosh awful sound...it's then you know something has to be done.
So, until mine's broke...I'm not fixing it. Try to find a reputable independent garage...Nissan service is outrageous. Personal anecdote: in the dealer this weekend for the annual "car care clinic" and asked about labor to replace my engine coils. I was told 1 1/2 hours, or about $150 bucks. What a joke. I came home and popped them in myself in 20 minutes.
And thanks to the coils parted out by NissMaxSE...my little 93 is running like a top, again!
