Whats wrong with my max?

Okay, I have a 1993 Maxima SE dohc auto transmission and I've had it for about 6 months, It has about 165k on it. About last week it had some trouble starting up and would try to start and just wouldn't until it just wouldn't do anything when I turned the key then I'd come home from school about 5 hours later and it would start right up....So I assumed it was just the batter(I have a 4 gauge cable coming off the battery(diehard) for my amp/subs, it did it a couple times since then and I needed a jump twice...So today I went and it wouldn't start so I said forget it and went to autozone and bought a redtop optima battery, I throw it in the car and not only will it still not start its making a new noise, like its huffing as well, I know its not the battery because Its trying to start....My question is, what could it be, maybe I flooded the engine, or have a bad starter or fuel filter....I'm also questioable about the gas I got yesterday...I got regular in brockton(ghetto town) maybe there was alot of water in it? I hate to see my maxima in pain...also is it bad for the car to switch off from octane grades, the last week I did premium and then regular a few times....any response to my horribly written entry is apriciated. thanks.

dude,,, WHAT?????

What was making the huffing noises, and you possibly have either a bad fuel pump or filter. when you say your car won't start in the morning and later in the day it would fire up, well that sounds like a temp. issue. If it was my car i would just give it overral general maintance look, oil, fuel, exaust PCV, just give everything a good look,

I don't know how to explain the sound its making now, like on top of it trying to start theres a sputtering sound that almost drowns out the sound of it trying to start up and when I turn off the key its goes eurrrg...I really hope this goes away by the morning....I gotta work.

I wanna say alternator, but you need to get your car to run to be able to check that, um the hissing noise can be made from a ton of the things, worse cas senerio head Gasket, or maybe fuel pump. When you turn the key on two clicks ahead just before you turn to start it, you should hear your fuel pump Charge up, if you don't hear it you have a bad fuel pump.

Is the hising noise sound electrical or like air escaping

Ok...I threw in a new starter today and the weezeing sound went away and its sounds like it should when trying to start up only problem is that it still won't start, I've tried jumping it like 3 times....now I'm think maybe my spark plugs need replacment or maybe my fuel injectors are dirty? or both?

check you distributor cap and all the connections. also try looking at the fuel pump fuse, maybe it is blown, and then if thats fine, have it be really quiet out and around your car. turn the key until the lights on the dash all light up. right when you turn the key here listen for a sound, hard to describe (if you want ill try to post a sound of it, I dunno if you can hear it on a frecording or not but hey im sick and have nothing to do so i can try) but you should hear a sound, like a pump running, and then it will stop after say 5 seconds. if you hear this then you fuel pump should be fine

Hi,

when you first put the key in and put it in the start position but do not start the car you should hear a sound in the area of the engine if you hear that you should be ok,

if you don't hear that there is a problem,

first problem is the fuel from the tank, if it is not getting in to the engine then you are having a problem with the fuel line,

second check the filter make sure the hose are connected to the fuel filter and try starting it again,

third is the car pressure, what i mean by pressure is the fuel line getting hard if it is hard then the car is pressure and you should be able to start the car,

changing the batter will give the car more power but will not fix your problem.

if you have any more questions im me at: cool2854@aol.com or email me at dnguyen80@sm.saddleback.edu,

I have another Idea as to why it won't start but i need to know if the Fuel Pump is working, If its working and your fuel line seems clean, Check to see if you have spark, it could be an electrical problem, or possible there a change that your MAF got wet and burned out, that happened to me last summer, and it took me forever to find the problem. I don't know of any way to check it other than tapping on it. But i would recommend thats the last thing you check, if you have no problems with your Distributor. I replaced my distributor my self, and i got it for $30 in a junk yard, and the MAF i also got from a junk yard for $35. Before anything check your Fuel pump. If you don't hear that thing pumping when you first turn the key, thats the whole problem.

Hi,

you should hear a huming sound in the back seats,

if you don't hear that huming sound when you start the car then you have a problem with the fuel line or the fuel pump.

DMad8724 is right, a burned out MAF shouldnt prevent a car from starting; only from running properly. However a malfunctioning one *might*, try disconecting it and seeing if it starts ok.

Walk into the local import shop or even better go to my website.
and tell them you want NGK plug # 2271 that is the stock # for the correct plug for the VE.
Helps keep the morons, from giving out the wrong plug.

ive had something similar of a problem... the car wouldnt start, then it would start at some other time, it would start in the mornings and wouldnt in the afternoon. this is what i did:

if you have automatic, then put it in neutral before you do anything, before you even put in the key in the ignition. that should start it, and when it does start, go outside and listen to the engine if it sounds weak.

if thats the problem, then its most liikely your fuel injectors. Ive been told here that stock fuel injectors are weak. look into that and replace your injectors.

new relay is 12 bucks...my dad gave him like 50 bucks for looking and it and hes doing somthing like ball joints for his explorer...so its all good. nothing was better than hearing that he had it started in like 15 minutes...but when my dad first called me he was a jerk and said, "Yeah, he just looked at it and I got some bad news, you need a new engine" so I just went, "Umm..No I don't!" I went into a little denial thing for a second...it was relief to hear that it was just a relay...hopfully nothing more after that though..

don't you hate it when they do that.
My uncle does that to me all the time.
But the jokes on him, I just tell him to go ahead and replace the engine!

Ok, new relay, started right up..no problem...shut it off...came back 10 mins later started right up...I was pretty happy...so I go to drive to autozone to return an extra relay and on the way I notice its acting pretty wierd like I'll step on the gas and it'll take a few seconds and launch me and the rpms will go from like 4-5 rpms and jump down to 1100 almost instantly, when I came to a stop it would put put put and feed like it was about to die....i'm really ****ed off...and if its something like a fuel pump I'm going to go insane....I just put on a new fuel filter and it wasn't started a for a few days after...could it just take time to break in? also the engines ticking is louder....I'm going nuts, I hope someone can under stand this mess of a post...just for refernce the relay is a gp 41-5021

If I feel the fuel line after the fuel filter it doesn't feel constant...when I go to start it before I listen for the fuel pump behind my back seats to hear if its bad...I didn't hear anything, well my hearing sucks but I didn't hear anything, after a while of it beings on the clicking gets pretty loud, I've noticed my radiator fans haven't come on at all...I'm starting to think fuel pump...or water in the tank or a clog somwhere in the line...also when I drove it last night when I came to a stop it was like put put put but when I put down the gas, it'd go after asecond...and the putting went away so I don't think its bad o2s. Help Me please...I'm going nuts

Fuel pumps can be intermittent! There is also a fuel pump relay in the trunk near the trunk latch that can be giving you a problem. But since you engine is so high-mileage, I'd say its the fuel pump, the filter on the pump will definitly need replacing anyway.

Another thing the fuel hose is supposed to give a pulsating feeling. As the injectors fire in succession the gas press will drop very briefly, hence the pulse feeling.
