Water pump

I'm leaking antifreeze and water and I'm pretty sure its coming from the water pump. It'll drip off the bottom of the crank pulley. So I might have to replace the water pump. BTW, this is on a VE not a VG. Anyone know where there are any write ups or can anyone let me know what all is involved in changing the water pump. I'd like to know what I'm getting into b4 I just hop into it. any help would be appreciated

Did it Myself on My 90SE. It takes time but not very difficult. You do need to
remove the Timing Belt so minus well replace it while you are at it. You may also want to replece the Belt idlet.
The following link will help. The VG engine procedure is simmilar to VE except for DOHC, which means the Timing Belt is routed differently (No biggie).

Also the following link has usefull Info on How To with good links info.

Hope it helps, and good luck.

are you still planning on dropping the tranny on that? If so, that would be the best time to replace it as you can tilt the engine over and get more room.

Yep! Weird thing though. Now it doesn't seem to leak at all and also when I went to put some anti freeze back in b/c of all that leaked out, it was full I dont understand. lol Oh yeah and another thing. The tranny shifts fine and everything but driving at like 55mph it will stay in third gear...when i give it just a lil more gas it will shift up into overdrive. as long as i'm accelarating a lil it will stay in overdrove but right when i let off it goes back to third gear. Why it does that, I have no clue...hoping someone of you might be able to help me out on that one.

huh? I thought all upto 92 came with VG engines. And if you DO have a VE, it should have 3 chains instead of a belt....shouldn't it?

When I did mine, we had to remove the 3 belts (the a/c, alternator and such belts)

then removed the UDP, and the pulley on the outside of the water pump

then to once removing all the bolts, we had to dislodge the engine toward the battery about 1-2inches to get the water pump to clear the engine block and the chassis.

its been over a year so I might have missed something, If it doesn't have ABS, ive heard of some removing it through the top of the engine bay

I just did the front crank seal, belts, hoses and water pump on my VE. The crank seal and belts were cake, but the water pump was a challenge due to the *TIGHT* spacing between the water pump, the front covers on the engine block and the frame. I didn't lift the engine, but in hind sight, it would have been much easier if I did. It took me over an hour (with many twists and turns and f-words) to remove the water pump from the vehicle once it was unbolted from the engine. Once it was out though, I got the new one back in much easier, since I already had the technique down. Note that the ABS brake lines run right down the frame in the area as well, so you must be extremely careful. One other note as well, make sure you get the correct crank seal from NISSAN, as the aftermarket ones do not fit. I found out the hard way, as the car sat for the weekend until I luckily found the seal in stock at a dealership about 30miles away on Monday. Damn, its nice to be leak free again! B-)
