wipers on my '93 maxima suddenly failed on me while driving in the rain last night :(
Well, that pretty much sucked...it started raining last night while I was on the highway coming home from a friend's house, and suddenly my damn wipers stopped...rather than continue driving on the highway I figured it would be better off if I took the first exit and stand on the side of the road..
So I check the fuse, and it seems fine...I change it anyway, with no luck of course. So I call AAA at about 11:45pm, and they say a towtruck will arrive in 30mins...well, 30mins later nothing, so I call again, and I was told he suddenly had to tow somebody else, so another 45-60mins later I call again and get the same reply...so I keep waiting till 2:15am, by which time it stopped raining...so I find a newspaper lying around in my car and dry my windshield, and headed home. In case you're wondering what my point is, it's that AAA sucks ***.
So back to a more relevent subject, does anyone know what it could be with the wipers? Sounds like a motor died to me, but I figured i'd ask the experts here first

Actually, it's not AAA that 'sucks' it's the towing company in your area that they do business with. My really good friend owns 2 towing companys, and she is a AAA certified company, she get's to all AAA members within 10 minutes(if possible due to location) AAA members are helped BEFORE regular members. So, like I said don't be mad at AAA, find out who they called last night to come pick you up, then call them and cuss THEM out!

I had this same problem you had back in December. I had the wipers running on my entire trip from NC to NJ. on my last 20 minutes of my trip, they stopped in the middle of the windshield. I opened up the cowl and saw that the linkage rod that connect the wiper motor to the wiper arms came off. What happened is there is a plastic button that snaps onto this metal ball. The plastic got worn out from no grease and could easily come off. I went to the junkyard to pull one off a wrecked Maxima for $10. Putting the new one on is a pain. you don't have much room to work where the wiper motor is, so I had to get a breaker bar and use the leverage to set the plastic button onto the metal ball on the wiper motor.
My ex g/f paid around $200 to have her camry wiper linkage replaced, the mechanics were laughing all the way to the bank =). All you will need is some black grease and a used wiper linkage rod from a salvage yard.

might be the motor, it's located on passenger side right behind the strut mount. Just take it off and bring it to a dealer to see if they could test it for free. You might have to pretend you're going to buy another one from their part department if this bad boy is dead.

Same problem happen 2 me when i was driving home from school in the snow .... whole window was whited out so i just drove the few blocks home with ma head out the window...(there was nobody on the roads anyywayz) turned out the linkage rod just snapped. By the way you can tell if your motor is shot by hitting the wipers on and if you hear noise coming from the engine bay like it still trying to move and nothing is happening then it is not your motor.

can you hear the motor running? I had a problem w/ mine, but it was the bar connect to the motor to the wiper arms that came off. If its the motor, I have a used motor I'd sell for $35+shipping. A lot better than $130 for a new one. Lemme know.

wow didn't expect so many helpful replies
actually, after not using the wipers for a while (like a day) it'll SLOWLY go up and then back down -- and eventually it dies again. When it dies though, and I try turning the wipers on, it twitches but doesn't really move. If it was the linkage, it would never actually move up and down, would it?
Hopefully i'll find some time today to open it up and check it out..

Hey i just had this same problem a week ago, and my dad and i were looking at it, and i thought, the motor was bad and satrted doing wiring checks and relay checks and all that other stuff, but in the end i found out that 3 of the 4 bolts had rattled out of the motor, that hold it to the fire wall, and the motor ha just bound up, so i put new bolts on and it works fine, so check that out. It just might be your problem, if it will work after a day or two, slowly. Hope this helps...

Unfortunately, I haven't had the chance to open it up yet..(i slacked off during spring break, and now i'm stuck cramming for an exam and trying to finish off a program that's due friday night).
I was just planning on buying a used windshield wiper motor and this way when I checked it out on saturday I had everything I needed (cheapest price I got so far is $10 plus $9.30 shipping via Priority Mail to NJ); the motors are all the same from '89-'94, right? Because the one i'm getting is pulled from a '91 max..
