My car is scared of the dark

Ok, I am the new owner of a 93 Maxima GXE. I bought it repo for next to nothing and am not familiar with Nissans. So forgive me if this is a stupid question.

When I drive my car at night, or use the headlights, the next day the battery is dead. If I do not use the lights everything is fine. My mechanic & the guys at the local Nissan dealership are baffled. I have not changed the light "wand" where you turn on the lights that is my last resort.

Any ideas or suggestions? All help will be appreciated.

hmm. I know this sounds obvious, but did you check the alternator? Or possibly even the battery cables and terminals?

Sometimes when you have crappy cables or corrosion on the terminals, the battery doesn't get a full charge and since the lights are the most draining electrical part, they would cause the car to go dead the fastest.

Since you took it to a dealer and a mechanic, I would think they would have checked these things, but you never know...

lol, thats just a funny, common sense will tell you that you have a toasted alternator, or a short, now come on, the dealership is just trying to make money, have autozone or advance auto check your alternator, they do this for free, and im willing to put money down that its the alternator

I can almost guarantee that it is not the alternator. After an 5-10 second jump the car will start & run fine for the rest of the day. IMHO if the alt was shot she wouldn't run for squat. Also, I trust my mechanic much more than any dealer.

I am getting to the point of putting in a battery kill switch for night use. I would prefer to fix the problem than the symptom.

Also, new battery & cables. That was my first fix on this. So I know there is no corrosion & I am postitive (after double checking) that the cables are good & the connections are good. Also had the alt. checked out.
