VE30DE Oil Filter alternative. Since the 15208-60U00 has been discontinued
heh so you two are on the same page after all. you use GTX or Syntec?
I'm not even sure if what i just said makes sense, im just really tired...
if you're not driving it much, and thrash it everytime you do.. wouldn't synthetic be MORE beneficial? rather than a car that gets driven on the highway, gently, and oil changed every 2-3 months? The longer oil sits, the more it breaks down.. i'm not sure if that impacts the filter itself as much as it does the oil and the parts the oil is supposed to lubricate.
The only benefit from using the bigger D3 filter would be a slightly(very slight) higher oil capacity, nothing else. The filter itself is not any "better" in quality then the other filters mentioned.
more filtration surface in a larger filter (assuming equal number of pleats per inch)
doesn't matter as much on a '90.. just use mobil1 or wix or purolator pureone. the DOHC (92-94SE) is the one that's super-picky about oil filters. Notice the topic title says "VE30DE" whereas your car has a VG30E.
Okay, I finally pulled the trigger and bought the D3 filter from my local Toyota dealer today and changed the oil with the same 5w-30 Castrol GTX. It is at LEAST 80 percent better as far as the ticking goes. It is only there on occasion now at start-up and every once in a while at idle (but still much quieter). I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this continues!
3.7 qts
Nice job
Thats my filter of choice as well. It worked better then the smaller F2 filter for me. Its always funny going to the Toyota dealer to get an oil filter for your Nissan, but Im use to it by now hehe.. Good luck.

I use Castrol 10w30
Wouldn't it be better to go with a 10w for a higher mileage engine, since it's worn down a bit? To fill in some cavities at start up maybe? I remember reading that somewhere. Also a w40 might be a drop much if your not at constant racing speeds.

the 40 will help protect the engine more once it gets up to operating temperature in my opinion.
You don't think 30 is enough? I would think that 40 would add some weight to engine operation during highway cruising. Maybe killing some fuel economy.
Next oil change I'll use mobil filter/oil, but i noticed no one has aid anything about the lucas additive stuff in which I'm guessing it really doesn't help. P.S. I've never used it just wondering has anyone???
I heard and believe that its all BS.. There are a few tests out there that prove that, but there are critics for everything. I perfer not to use it.
I changed my oil a week ago. I used the Toyota D3 filter, Pennzoil 5w30 and about 4 ozs. of Marvel Mystery Oil. The VTC's hammered for a few mins. after the change but then got quiet. It's been quiet for over a week now. I've own this car for 10 years and it's never been quiet until now. I'm on my second engine that I bought directly from Japan because a VTC came apart on the first one and busted out the front engine cover. Thanks to the Maxima forum and it's members.

Why is this so HARD???
I just picked up a '90 Maxima. I'm not sure what I should do with the thing as far as oil and filter and this thread just made things a little more confusing.
The car has 63,800 on the dash, I was able to get a ton of receipts yesterday that indicate that the oil has been changed several times at Jiffy Lube and they were using 10W-30.
My question is, should I stick with 10w-30? Also, what filter should I use? What engine does this car have, VE or VG? Is there some trick to changing the oil? How much oil do I need to change it with the filter?
An old lady had the car and only drove it 8 miles per day, down hill (the lady is now 87). I'm not keeping the car, just got it to pass on to someone that could use a nice car as a dd. The car is missing but that's another issue.

I have searched...
I do appreciate the information you provided and do apologize for not formally thanking you for the valuable information. Do you know how much oil this car needs? I have spent a couple of hours weeding through the site looking for this basic information. It is really hard for me to spend hours on the site for a car that I hope to have less than a week. I'm trying to fix & service it so I can give it to a needy family. Between being a care giver for my wife of 24 years, running two businesses, searving my community more than 10 hours per week, helping people around the world learn about a dementia illness, helping people on two other auto repair websites, trying to help needy people that can't afford to purchase a good running car and the list goes on, it helps to find a friendly place like this to get a quick answer every now and then. I really don't need to read another 900 post about the car just to figure out if it needs premium gas or four quarts of oil. I do appreciate your help and please do know that I'm not just plain lazy.

How much oil does the '90 model Maxima need...
I called the dealer and they told me that they use 10W-30. They also said that the car takes 4.5 quarts. So I drained the oil, chenged the filter and put 4.5 qts in and it was to much. I had to drian about 1/2 quart out for it to be right. So the answer is............................. about 4 quarts.
I must add that Alldata states that oil change requires 4 quarts with a new filter. I use 10w-40 with half a quart of the Lucas Oil Stabilizer, and a an oil filter from Oreilly's without any problems.
Great info... picked up the Mobile M1-103 and filled her with the 5w-30 Castrol GTX....I ran her for a few minutes to check for leaks. Got her on the open road... wow!! what a differnce..VTC's are barley noticeable.
