timing

I bought a 92 Maxima back in Oct.It ran fine for about a month when the vacuum line to the brake booster developed a crack in it.Fixed it,ran fine until about a month ago.
Now it idles up and down,no power really, hesitates, poor mileage, all that good stuff.
I'm thinkink an injector, but I got the idea the timing might be off, especially since until the Maxima my newest car was an 88 subaru dl with a 1.8 two barrel carb.I tried googling it,but i don't want to buy another useless haynes manual.
If not the timing how do you check the injectors, particularly the back ones that i cant even see.
Thanks,
Chris

Have just finished cleaning the throttle body's butterfly vavle. Now it's idling around 1000 rpm's.Something must of not liked it.Probally should of left it alone but it was clogged with carbon.

It is always good to keep your throttle body and idle air control valve clean. It might have just made the problem seem worse because now your TB can move more freely.

Your idle problem could also be your coil packs. Your car has a coil on plug (distributorless) ignition. Here is a pic of the front three coil packs.

If they develop cracks in them, you might have idle problems. My idle rolled a lot and once in a while would dip to nearly 0 rpm. My middle front coil pack was cracked and when I replaced it, the idle smoothed out. This doesn't mean it is your problem, but it's a place to start.

To check them, unscrew the 10mm bolt on the top and pull them up off the spark plug. The cracks I had ran up and down along the thick plastic housing on the top part.

Sounds like your throttle position sensor on the Throttle body was moved...

The TPS has a variable resistor inside of it that adjusts the idle... if you loosen the two screws/bolts on it you can adjust it one way or the other...idle should be around 700rpm for best fuel economy, make sure both of the plugs from it are plugged in one is the main wire harness, and the other is a bypass wiring if the variable resistor goes, which makes the engine run in the limp home mode.

I just replaced mine, i had to replace this on my 1989 VG as well... the resistor develops some bad points on it. So you may need to replace it, but check the connections.

If you want to check it for resistiance, unhook both connectors and check the pins on one of them with an ohmmeter as you move the throttle body... should have a 1k to 9k ohm range.... when they go bad, the range is like 30k to infinity...so if you see that you should replace it...

Have fun!

Brian

I wouldn't doubt that it got moved had to persuade the airduct back on the throttle body, not much, but probally just enough.
In case any one was wondering,I found one of those Tornado thingies in there. It was all crimped and beat up,things seem to be useless. So of course I put it back in.guess I'll take it out tomorrow and have a laugh or two.
