ok check it out,

most of the people here with a 5spd said their tranny makes noise. but i think mine's makin too much. I have new fluid, i had it changed. it whines when i downshift, and when i'm at cruising speed on the highway, it makes noise. When i move the shifter around while i'm in 5th on the highway, i can hear kind of a rubbing sound, and it's always there a little. does anyone else have this problem? also, does anyone know the correct procedure to check your tranny fluid level on a manual for a 92? there's a plug on the side, that's what i opened before to see if it was full and it was past that plug. thanks guys!

My tran started making a lot of noise around 150K miles. Mechanic had to repace bearings. Wish I had taken it to a dealer. It started blowing fuses, it also jammed in gears. It was caused by a damaged neutral switch, which put copper ***** all over.

The transmission went about the same time as the clutch. If I still have the car when it needs a clutch, I'm going to have everything done at once.

BTW, mine is a 89 with 210,000 miles. Hope that helps.

Sorry flyry but I don't have any help for you but I do have a question regarding the tranny.

Tom200k, please elaborate on the "jamming of gears" because I have a 5speed maxima and in the morning sometimes after putting it into reverse and then putting into first, something jams because as I release the clutch the car doesnt move, the RPM just lowers and the car stall. No matter how much gas I put the car won't budge, the RPM just drops. It seems to happen usually when the car is cold...

is this the same problem you had, Tom200k? Or does anyone else know?

My car has the same problem. It is caused by sychronizers( excuse my spelling). They are small gears that help with gear engagement even when the engine RPM and transmission RPM aren't the same. The short term solution is to pull it out of gear and back in again. The long term solution is a transmission tear down.

FiSH don't skimp on this. Take it to a good Nissian dealer. I know that sound like like an impossible find. I'd like to take this opportunity to mention Sunbelt Nissian in Augusta, GA on the South side. There are 2 other Sunbelt Nissians in trhe area, but their not as good. Sunbelt is owned by the Watson family and they are almost as compulsive about Maximas as people that post here. No, they didn't pay me to say that! {:>>>

If you like golf or horses, you could keep busy while your car is worked on.

I feel, in the long run, manual transmissions are more
expensive than automatics, but it is worth it (to me).

Hope that helps,
Tom

Thank You

Yeah that answer helps a lot, I had no idea what the problem was, and neither does the transimssion shop that keeps looking at it. They didn't tear down the transmission yet but maybe it will be the last resort.

You sound like you never repaired this problem with the synchronizers. I mean personally it doesn't bother me to take it in and out of gear (what i've been doing) but I definately don't want to do any more damage to the transmission. Do you know if it is dangerous to just ignore the problem? Also how much do you think it is to fix up this annoying glitch?

G-d bless you for sharing my pain!

Get back to me!

Re: Thank You

You're right, I haven't repaired it. I don't thing it will hurt anything. Just pull it out and put it in again. My wife won't drive the car anymore, too much giggle this and bump that. Before syncronizers, people had to double clutch, that is depress clutch, match rpm, engage clutch. If you didn't do it right the gears would grate. There is no danger. A few years ago, sychronizer were a luxury! I remember when 1st gear didn't have them.

I think it would cost about $1000 to 1500 to do it right. While they are at it, they might as well replace bearings, which makes the transmission quieter and oil seals. I'd suggest replace the neutral switch. Most of the expense is labor in getting it in and out.

My advice is to wait for the clutch to go and do it all at once. Please keep in touch.

My car needs a new timing belt etc., new exaugst system, suspension and what ever breaks after that. May just drive it until it dies.

Best wishes,

Tom

Re: Re: Thank You

Unfortunately I replaced the clutch about a month ago...
Oh well, that's life but hey I guess I'm gonna leave everything the way it is.

Keep in touch and let me know if you got any news!

My guess is worn main bearings. There is about 6 of them, I think, in a transmission. Same solution, if you are going to do it, do it right. There is a small chance, that it might be the gates, which is easy to adjust.

Sorry we degressed with other folk's problems.
