no boost for me...

No, this isn't an April fools joke.

I took my turbo off because it was leaking oil. I thought it was due to a seal inside breaking but I'm thinking now that it might be my p.o.s. oil return line. I took it off and started to look at it and noticed this:

8o

What's even scarier is most likely some went into my engine... hopefully nothing was damaged. Not sure how it happened but I'm almost wondering if it was due to shaft play since the turbine wheel was the same way.

I'll be putting on my replacement turbo tomorrow hopefully.

nope, just an old crappy 300zx t3. have another one sitting in my trunk that i'm going to throw on.

most like that's due to not cooling it down properly. the next one will have the water cooling set up so i shouldn't experience this as soon.

only reason VEs are fast is because people hurry to get out of yalls way when they hear you coming up on them "ticking" like a bomb ....they think its the Taliban or something.

I'll get some pics of it when i take the turbo back off. Its a pretty crappy setup but it worked for a while. I may need to somehow used braided hose so it doesn't kink which what I think it did somehow.

I'm thinking since both wheels were like that it was just due to shaft play... however if something flew through the engine it could have easily taken out both so its really hard to tell. Hopefully the cyilnder walls weren't scraped at all because I know for sure the impeller wheel pieces had to have shot through the engine.

Got it all bolted on tonight and I also got the water lines to the turbo hooked up finally however I seemed to have sprung a coolant leak somewhere so I'll have to find where its leaking and fix it tomorrow before I can drive it.

I have some comparison pictures of the compressor and turbine wheels that I'll get posted tomorrow. Its crazy how bad those things got tore up.

So no issues with your oil return line then? Just the play in the shaft? Or have you found any reminents of anything ingested?

I checked the oil return line and didn't see any sort of permanent kinks or anything so I believe that is fine. I might try getting a hold of one of those scopes that you can stick in the spark plug hole so I can see if there are any scrapes on the cylinder wall. That would tell me right away if it was shaft play or some object flying through.

yeah, the pictures are still uploading. our cable service out here sucks a big one. went from nearly 2.5 mbps download (in indiana) to around 400 kbps and the uploading is even worse

they should be working now though.

when you removed the wheels...how bad was the shaft play?? it looks like you sucked something in..since the major damage is at the center of the wheels...if it was shaft play wouldn't you have more damage at the edges due to the wobbling of the shaft? but IMO if the exhaust wheel was damaged that would possibly imply internal motor debris, but then again you say the car is still running fine. weird...I've never had experience with blown turbos yet...but Baggs had a very similar prob, but I think his compressor wheel was intact just exhaust wheel damage.

The play was pretty bad. Lots of side to side play and in and out play. It does seem that something flew through there but I have no clue what that could have been... its really strange. I haven't really noticed decreased performance, heck I didn't even notice a change in spooling times nor boost pressure. It all appeared normal.

Well glad to hear it wasn't more serious than it was. At least the issue was not with the oil return line, and you don't have to figure out a better place to run your line. Good luck getting everything running again.

LMAO, Maybe our engine ticking isn't so bad after all, in that case I'm gonna make it tick louder instead of trying to silence it.

I took it out for a drive tonight and everything seems to be working as it should. I'll find out tomorrow when I take the hour long drive back to college.
