HELP! Can I swap a SOHC vg for a DOHC ve? 92 into a 90?

I have a good looking 90 SE 5 spd. w/ a SOHC that is running very well, but I have my "wrecked" 92 SE 5 spd. w/ 104K on a very strong engine and I'm wondering if this would be an easy swap. Anyone done this? I just drove the 92 and MAN! I miss the power this car has! I have a buddy who will do the swap if it won't require a lot of remodeling of wiring, etc. If I don't sell the car whole, I'm thinking of swapping motors.
Please advise! How much extra hassle is this? Will it even bolt up?

P.S. I am looking for an antenna unit for the '90

Thanks.

From what they told me its not worth the time and trouble to do it.Im in the same boat I have a 93 gxe with the sohc motor SLOW DID I SAY SLOW. But what even makes it worst is that I have a wall in my car. About 500lb of speakers boxs batterys wires and tvs so it get even slower. But im seirousley thinking of getting the jdm vg30et witch has about 200-215 horse power(turbo)
And seems to be a fairly east swap. But if you kept your sohc try some boilt ons like cai y pipe and redo your exaust. Check my home page for the weight.

Your'e better off just buying an SE w/ the VE motor. Supposedly the swap is not worth it as I know you would have to change the wiring harness, maybe engine mounts (don't quote me on that), and maybe the CPU. I would say to either fix the SE, buy an SE, or turbo the VG.

Why is avery one so afraid of Vg/VE swaps? I know swapping engines in most v8's(including PCM's, harnesses, sensors etc.) is common and easy, I've done it. i realize being FWD makes it more of a PITA, but if you have everything already, Why Not?

Ok.....

I give up. Why not? Are the trannys interchangable? So who out there needs a great VE engine? Driven to your front door. Talk to me!

i could be done but you have to swap THE ENTIRE ENGINE BAY HARNESS not just the engine harness i mean every wireharness in the engine bay including all relay boxes and fusable link boxs it would be a pain in the ***

I was just doing some rewires on a VG today, like Chad was saying, you'll need all those new wires.

You could do it, probably pretty 'easy' (easy as in no really cutting/grinding/welding/etc type of modifications).

I was just looking in the FSM it appears that you need the alternator + engine control harness/ecu from the donor car. Everything else should be a matter of swapping the mechanicals over. You will need the VE Y pipe too since its different from the VG.

You would also need the VE trans, axles and spindles......

vg tranny will bolt up to the ve since the trannies are the same but the ve trannies are supposed to be a bit stronger so the tranny swap would probably be a good idea. not needed though.

Just do it man! Don't wait for our approval, and if it works or doesn't, at least you can answer the question next time someone asks it!

yes, you can have a VE and this is how.

1. Get a piece of paper, marker and tape.
2. Write: FS: Good Look 1990 Nissan Maxima SE 5 Speed on the paper.
3. Tape it to the window of your car.
4. Hope someone offers you some cash for it.
5. Take as much cash as you can get.
6. Look for a VE 5 speed.
7. Buy it.

7 easy steps and you now own a VE 5 speed without picking up a wrench.

But wrenching can be fun! Besides, if he pulls it off it might provide some inspiration for the rest of us.

I haven't looked at the FSM's, but just from working and comparing the 2 cars today, I really think you'd have to replace the whole relay box infront of the battery among other things.

It was a 1992 SE 5spd vs 1989 SE 5spd. Even the way the boxes are mounted is different between the two cars. (IMHO its not that big of a deal, but I'm just saying they are different).

Ok< Ok

I'm bummed but talked out of it. I like to work on them, but I'm not ready for two gutted Maxs in the driveway and a greasy copy of the FSM on the floor.
dmontzmax wins prize for best advice.
red92maxse, I'm in SE Ohio.
So my "wrecked" 92SE is still for sale with 104K on the VE with Warpspeed Y-pipe and 5 spd trans. www.cardomain.com/memberpage/579192
Thank you everyone for the input.

this is EXACTLY what i was saying in my first post you have to replace the entire harness under the hood meaning ALL relay boxes and then run the harness into the car and hope it pluges into the restofthecars harness. if not youd have to swap the ENTIRE CAR HARNESS good luck

I just looked at the pics and the car isn't that bad. You could probably do all the work yourself other than the rear quarter panel, but all you need on the fron is the hood, fender, bumper cover, and maybe inner bumper support, maybe headlight and bracket, corner light. Maybe that is alot of parts, but It doesn't look like any frame damage, I'd try to fix the thing, just buy a parts car and swap out the parts.
