Fluttering/Ticking Sound

Before you jump to VTC's keep in mind this is a VG engine.

That being said, it seems since I did my last oil change this very quiet ticking sound has developed when I accelerate. Now about 2-3 weeks went by since it started and it seems to have gotten a bit worse. It's still quiet but noticible during acceleration from a stop to somewhere around 2k rpms. It seems that after the car has warmed up for a while it goes away.

So what is causing this? Lifters? Any easy way to fix this?

Thanks guys

Alex, what is a broken exhaust stud?

*ding*

Okay, I'll take common VG problems for $200 this time.

Mine does the same thing. And from what I was told, it is the lifters. As far as ways to fix it. I am going to use seafoam in a little while. If that doesn't work, then I am going to try using the ATF solution, then if that still doesn't work, I will look into replacing them.

*EDIT*
Forgot about the studs. It could be that too. Although when I had mine checked out, mechanic couldn't hear any exhaust leaks.

It seemed to start instantly after the oil change though, so are you telling me changing my oil has broken an exhaust stud? lol

I just noticed someone else has made a thread recently with what sounds like the exact same problem: http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=303903 except his car has 197,000 miles while mine has somewhere in the 113-115k range.

Time to get a short length of tubing and put it to your ear. Then you can move the tube around to try to pinpoint the area where the noise is coming from.

Fluttering is a sign of a busted manifold stud. It's pretty easy to inspect the fronts. The rears might be harder. ie.. jack up the car and look from the bottom.

Why are you selling the BBK kit anyway??

Maybe I shouldn't have used the word fluttering. It is more of a light ticking only during the low RPM range during acceleration. And of course, the ticking gets faster as the RPM's get faster.

My first post on this site- glad I found you guys because I have a similar problem with my 94 Maxima 5sp. It's been doing this for at least a year: that "ticking" sound- especially when the engine is cold and just idling, but you can still hear it when it's hot. And it can be loud. Valves? Lifters?....The obvious question: is there any "mechanic-in-a-bottle" that will quiet this thing down? Any help would be really appreciated- thanks all!

You have an SE right? Your ticking is the VTC's(variable timing something or other, heh)... It only happens on the VE engines and is probably the most common problem on those cars. Unfortunately it is an expensive thing to fix, unless you have them rebuilt and do it yourself. On Craigs website there is instructions on how to ground the VTC's which will quiet them up, but I think you lose a bit of horsepower by doing so. Look in the FAQs, his website should be listed.

Thanks- just wondering what will happen if the problem isn't fixed. -P

I have a VE and I have a similar problem -- the funny thing is I can hear it at the same time as I can hear the VTCs. I then grounded the VTCs and I can only hear the light ticking now. It happens only on acceleration and I can sort of find a sweet spot around 2500 rpm. The thing I hate is that sweet spot is usually about where I have it when I am driving around town.

This ticking has been there for roughly a month now. I recently changed the oil and added Marvel Mystery Oil, hoping to stop it. It did seem to quiet down a little, but it's definitely still there. I don't think it's my exhaust studs, because I can't hear it at all at idle and it doesn't have that kind of a raspy fluttery sound exhaust leaks usually have.
