What's up with my Maxima? Starter issues...

this happens about 2-3 times a week, morning or night or whenever. i get in my car, turn the key in the ignition, and car does not start up. i can hear a faint electrical signal, but the car doesn't start. what i usually resort to doing is putting the car in neutral, pushing it a few inches forward or backward (what a hassle!!), and it starts up find after that. sometimes when i'm parked on an incline and i can't push the car anywhere, i have to sit inside and make a vigorous rocking motion, as if i'm really enjoying a good ******* . anyway, i'm sure it looks bad to anyone watching from a distance, and i'd like to never have to do that again.

this really sucks when i'm in the ghetto parts of town, and pulling out of a friends place at 3 AM. scares the **** out of me, makes me wonder if i'm going to get scalped one day while my car refuses to start.

whats up with my max?

yep had the exact same problem with my 92. Quite annoying when u want to leave and cant. Broughts it in to a nissan dealer, starter died like 5k miles before that, it overheated and couldn't turn over, had to buy a new one, now one worries there.

Shibby, my fiancee has a '92 Max GXE - and I'll bet it's the same very simple problem hers had when she first got it (used), namely the shifter. Because the car won't start unless it's FULLY in "Park" gear, hers would also not start in the same way yours currently is. Through trial and error, we discovered that if she pushes forward on the shifter so that it's all the way forward (even though it seems like it's already in Park, of course!), she starts it just fine EVERY time. Next time this happens, just push forward on the shifter and see if that solves the problem. Hopefully that's literally all it is - gear slippage (or some such!).
