A week or so, I posted a message concerning my odometer problem. It had suddenly quit working, both trip and odometer. I found this to be very troubling since the only help I could find on fixing it was to replace the cluster assy. with a used one. Well, I found the trouble and I hope what I found will be of service to others in the gen 3 Maxima community. Please note that I did not have any problems with my speedo or tach functions. My cruise control works also. I found a used cluster on eBay and used it as a "donor" to disassemble. I found that the trip and odometer wheels are driven by a small servo type motor that plugs into the speedo pc board. It has four wires and is easily disconnected from the plug in connector. By removing the temp/fuel guage section (screws on the rear of the cluster), you have clear access to the motor and the odometer wheels. Then, you can remove the two motor securing screws and out pops the motor. I noticed that the old motor had rough places in it when manually turning it. I can only assume that the bearings were either dry or faulty. I replaced the motor with the one from the "donor", and now my odometer is working fine. I turned the clock up about 40 miles before putting it back in operation (the week back and forth to work). Folks, this is a real easy fix and took me about 2 hours including removing all of the necessary panels and cluster assy. The screws are all the same size except for the motor screws so that is no problem (throw them all in a small cup, you'll be fine!). If you are having trip/odometer problems ONLY, this is probably your cure for this problem!
