Which tranny cooler ??

I'm going to get a valve body kit very soon but I want to get my tranny cooler first so I can install it so that I'll save some money by doing that work myself. What size tranny cooler should I go with? Anybody have one?

On my old white maxima, I bought a B&M supercooler and liked it alot. I got the smallest size which was still rated for over 10,000lbs GVW. I can't remember where I purchased it though.

Actually, if he is getting the valve body kit, then I agree, get a big one. I bought mine just as insurance, to prolong the life of the tranny, so a huge one would be overkill for that application.

What stage VB are you getting. I'm getting stage 2 this summer with the cooler. All of this just so I can move to South Carolina.

I got a light duty cooler as insurance after a rebuild but I don't have the VB mod. Seems like it would be a better idea to go a little bigger to deal with the extra stress. BTW, the hose that came in the box was not enough so you'll probably need more.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...spagename=WDVW Would a big cooler like this be good? I'm guessing if I go with something in the 19,000-26,000 GVW I can't really go wrong. In this case is the bigger the better??

i had a 12,000 GVW hayden cooler from autozone in my vg. i've installed a lot of junk, but this cooler was such a pain for some reason (scratched my hands like crazy). i recommend getting one though.

I bought the B&M 70265 from Autozone. My tranny was acting up and it was a last ditch effort to save it. I didn't even get a chance to install it before it went. The construction on this one is serious though. Those cooling rows won't get plugged or bent from road debris. Also, for the size (fits in a shoe box) it cools 15,000 GVW. I'm doing a swap to 5spd so I don't need it now. I paid about $50 for it. I would offer to sell it to ya but since it wasn't used I'll just get my money back.

Also, it didn't come w/a install kit. I pieced together some powersteering hose (by the ft), 1/2 to 3/8 hose nipples, and 3/8 hose clamps. It woulda worked but I never got the chance to install it.

Post some info when ya get the VB mod done. I'd like to see how it works out.

Good luck,

Fugi

Guys,

Is there any benefit to have a tranny cooler on a 5spd? I thought I heard someone mention it somewhere in here before.

Just curious, that's all

You can't put a tranny cooler on a 5-speed.

Even though you are correct, you are barking up the wrong tree in "this" place. Let me explain. Tranny coolers were a big thing on the DotOrg 6-7yrs ago, and ever since then people have been spreading the wrong advise of getting the biggest one that fits. At this time eBay must be down because I can't see the link you guys posted.

When I got my cooler back then, I got the smallest GVW cooler available which I believe was a 10K GVW cooler. What's the GVW of a Max? 5,000lbs I'm guessing, so why would anyone install something that rated for one of those mega Uhaul moving trucks which has a GVW of 24,000lbs.

IMO installing a too large of a cooler might lower your line pressure.

it matters where you live too. in the winters in the north, your tranny will be really sluggish if you have a huge cooler even though most people cover it up with cardboard. 12,000 GVW was perfect in chicago's winters and memphis summers. just another thing to consider. definitely nothing more than 15,000 should be considered IMO, but it's your car.

I understand what you guys are saying but I gotta be truthful on one thing.....Whenever I can get that car to WOT I do!! lol I push that car extremely hard and I know that tranny takes a beating. Especially in NYC traffic. Would a 19,000GVW cooler be too much? I was about to get a 22,000GVW cooler but if it's going to make the engine run sluggish in the winter or kill line pressure then I'll go with a smaller cooler. As long as I can extend the life of this tranny.

Then I'm afraid I have to be totaly truthful with you. Someone already stated how it felt his 12K cooler was perfect for ShyTown's winter and summer. Internetautomar and myself already stated too big of a cooler is not a good thing. Granted all this info is based our opinions and unless someone else chimes in with their opinion (or actual fact) stating how a larger cooler works fine without any adverse effect, why would you ask if a 19K cooler be too much?

Since you're in NYC why not use a cooler that's perfect for winter and summer. Why go thru the hassle of covering the cooler for winter driving when you can just use one cooler, install it and forget it.

A little of topic
How are things in Springfield Gr. I grew up in that area back in the 70's-80's down the block from that car wash on 220th St and Merrick Blvd in Laurelton

I'm with you on this one, I'm only going with about 10K GVW, I live in Texas and it doesn't get that cold down here. This might make me actually let the car warm-up like its supposed to. Hayden seems to be a good one from what I've read on here so far. I need to go to autozone to get some hood supports anyway.

That does help, or get a bottle of Lubegard RED it helps keep down the temps without the need for an add on cooler.
There many problems with adding on an incorrect trans cooler.
