ported throttle body

i was just curious if a ported throttle body really has any noticeable effect or if it is just a useless mod. i doesn't seem to me like it would help that much.

-thanks

There was a thread not too long ago, Aaron92se also has a how-to on his website.

Basically better throttle response and pulls harder

port the throttle body! i noticed a difference (more power down low, alot more responsive) and i didnt have the manifold inlet done at that point. we'll see what kind of a difference it makes when everything is all matched up.

So I would take the dremmel and grind the outside edge of the throttle body, put it back together and thats it? Sounds easy!

Here is the thread MrGone might have been talking about. Look for the post by Bryan H, in case you don't know he's been on the .org for years and had his VE in the 14's N/A and like 14.3 w/ nitrous. According to him porting the TB and matching the intake manifold got him 6 hp and 13 ft/lbs on a dyno, which are pretty big gains.
https://maxima.org/forums/showthread...3&page=5&pp=30

Aaron's website has a good visual aid of what you are trying to do, but I don't remember if it mentions anything about matching the plenum to the TB after porting. When I do mine I'll be taking the intake manifold and TB off so it isn't going to be a quick job.

not quite.
you have any idea what a velocity stack is? you bell out the front side as much as possible (so it doesnt crush when you put a hoseclamp on and tighten it down), so the same to the back side, polish it up, match the intake manifold inlet to the backside. if you look at the TB the general shape is already there. DO NOT for ANY REASON port where the plate is, that MUST stay the same. you'll see theres a flat part in the middle already, you need to keep that. dont make any wierd waves or dips in the surface of where you're porting, keep it smooth. make it a smooth transition to the flat part thats already present then bell it out again at the rear then match the manifold. look at aaron's website (link is in a previous post i think), the picture says it all. how much you go is up to you.

I ported my TB on my VE auto (and port matched the intake manifold).. it was alot of work and took forever to get it all perfect. I got it out to 70mm. I honestly didnt notice much of a difference except some better throttle response. I'm sure it's good for a few hp though probably only detectable on the dyno/at the track (where Aaron got definite results).

BTW rosamax.. Bryan H's 14.3@98 was N/A

I left the TB and stuff on it because I was too lazy to take it all off, but I did get all my other goodies off it

That link provided above is my old website. I currently use this website the most:

http://www.littlebabywebs.com/maxima/maximalbw.html

This is the link to my latest write up:

http://www.littlebabywebs.com/maxima/tb/tbpage.htm

I seriously believe that I shaved .15 at the track with this simple mod.

Would the gains be even greater if you bored out the entire section of the TB and had a new custom throttle plate made? It just seems like since you are constrained by the throttle plate diameter, that the gains aren't maximized since you can't widen the entire length of the TB.

yes, but its more worth your time to frankenstein a bigger throttle body on (i beleive VG33 is bigger...) and port that.

Yeah, I agree. I think ASP can bore your stock TB all the way and give you a new plate. That should be better than this little port job I did. But, I think a bigger TB and porting that would be better than boring the stock TB.

The stock TB is 60mm, I would like to find something around 65, but right now, I've only found 70mm, which I think is too big.

Well, reason I ask is because I picked up a complete VE 5-speed intake and TB on Ebay for cheap, so it might be "easier" for me to do what I suggested. Extrude honing is out of the question, as the cost / performance ratio is pretty terrible.

Has anyone found a TB that will fit on the VE without too much modification? I know Matt mentioned in this thread that the Q45 has a larger TB than the VE, has anyone else tried to put a larger TB on our cars?

It just seems like if you are going to do 5 hours of porting work you might as well spend that time getting a larger throttle body to work.
