Anyone who's rebuilt VTC's before, what tools did you use?
Would it be possiable to use sockets instead of that 20mm steel ball thing?

Just looking for some tips/tricks.

Also studs, use the Nissan ones or go with the ARP's? I'm kinda leaning towards the Nissan because thats what Matt and Jeffro have been using. hmm.

hmm...socket instead if the steel ball? kinda doubt that. Got access to the big a$$ press? talk to your local stealership...they might be willing to hook you up..

i was checking the instructions out and it looks like it's be best to take them out and let them do the rebuilding...at least for me...

I've got a press, and I plan on doing mine myself. That being said, I've not started yet... The parts got here on Tuesday, and the weather has been pretty crappy. We might be declared a national disaster area next week due to flooding.

When I did my rebuild I didn't use the 20mm steel ball (as per the TSB) Instead I used misc. items laying around the shop. My suggestion, rent one of those ball joint removal kits. Even though I didn't use the kit, I could imagine how helpful the kit would have been.

Personally if I had to do the studs again I probably would have gone with regular metric studs from local parts store, but good quality of course. I can't remember how much I paid for the Nissan studs, but if the parts store studs were half the price that's the route I would have went. Forget about ARP studs.

The Nissan replacement studs worked fine, but the VG30ET replacement studs are a bit shorter than the OEM VE30DE studs. The replacement studs were long enough to torque down the exh. manifolds, but I would have like them to be just as long as the OEM VE30DE studs.

parts are about $60 IIRC (VTC rebuild kits for front and rear cams), then you need an upper intake manifold gasket and valve cover gasket.
total of about $100 in parts, probably less.

I ordered the parts to do the knock sensor at the same time, and I spent about $300. $125 was the knock sensor itself.

Well for Chris's car first it started out with studs, then went to VTC's and with VTC's goes the knock sensor sub harness.
