Can't get my timing just right!

For those that know how to do timing I need your help.

You know how you can adjust the timing around 15 degrees by losening the bolt at the base of the distrubuter and rotating it?

And it's it's too far out... You need to lift up the distributer and turn the rotor slightly one way or the other.

Well I can't get it just right. Either needs to go further clockwise and if I turn the rotor, it's needs to go a lil further counter clockwise then the bolt will allow it.

I even tried losening the rotor and moving it either way. Still can't get it close enough.

Any tips?

You may have to do it right and use a timing light, from what Ive read so far. I want to do this also but I dont want to mess up anything.

I've never timed an engine before and it too me about an hour. Once I had good injectors andyway. Long story, jsut don't skimp on a rebuild.

It is possible to do, and I found it by trial and error. I fine-tuned it wil the light. The gear has reasonably fine threads, so its easy to skip one trying to set it. Make sure you line up the rotor with the #1 contact while the engine is at TDC. Notice I said the contact, its not the mark on top of the cap.
