ABS warning light on

I just changed both front axles on my '92 SE. Yep, the right one with the three bolts on the support was a bear.

Since installing the new ones, the ABS warning light comes on in the instrument panel when I go more than 3-5 MPH. It goes back off if I shut the engine off and restart the car, but comes back on again.

I did NOT damage either the sensor or the new axles during the procedures, and I have the correct axles with the ABS "gear" that the sensor sees.

Any ideas? The LED code of 5 flashes indicates that the left front sensor is not working, but the light came on after I changed the right side, before doing the left.

Don't know if the ABS is actually working or not - it's much easier in the snow or rain to get it to go off, but it's hot and dry now.

the ABS should go into "fail-safe" mode whenever the light goes on.
Chances are you either:
a. Damaged the wire/sensor
or b. (more likely) got an axle with the wrong ring on it.

Did you unbolt the abs sensor when doing the axles? If not, you probably stretched/damaged it.

Looks for UK nissans in the stickies. Has the diagnostic procedure.

Thanks. I have the service manual and it says about what the UK Nissan link says. I need to check the resistance of both sensor and see if they fall within the expected value in ohms. If not, then I'll see about getting new ones. In the meantime, I'm going to disconnect the battery and see if that resets anything.

Probably a., but don't know how - didn't stretch it or anything like that. I checked the old axles very carefully to see that they matched the new ones visually.

I'm not sure, but I believe that in models without ABS, the rings (gears, whatever) are not on the axles at all.

I need to check the resistance of both sensors and see if they fall within the expected value in ohms. If not, then I'll see about getting new ones. In the meantime, the first thing I'm going to do is disconnect the battery and see if that resets anything.

Thank you for your input!

Do the diagonstic to at least see what side is causing the fault.

Buying new from Nissan = $!
Sourcing it from a boneyard = aro $10-$20. I've done this twice

Hmmmm - great idea about junkyard. Will check it out. Thanks!

I checked earlier today with a NIssan dealer in Arizona (Brown & Brown) who discounts about 35% for out-of-state mail order parts - they're $100 apiece!

I did the diagnostic earlier - says left front (5 flashes). I checked the resistance on both sides and got nothing at all - open circuit. On the other hand, I also tried to check the rears - too hard to get at, and couldn't get a reading there because I couldn't get a connection (couldn't see inside the connector to touch the 2 contacts).

Yeah, I got a "web site not responding" error message, so tried again, got the same thing, and gave up after the third time. Obviously, the error message was in error....

Where did you find them? There is NOTHING in the Washington, DC area. I called about 15 places just now, including in MD area.
