Bumping up timing

Bumping up timing
Hi, I have heard about people bumping up the timing. How do I do this? Will I have to run Premium? Also I Have heard people refering to an engine as a "VG" what is it? My 90 Maxima has a 3L is that a "VG"? Thanks.
