How Can I Get the Best Engine Performance on a '93 Maxima GXE?

What cheap modifications can I make to my '93 Maxima GXE to increase the engine performance considerably? Also, I've seen some suspension kits for a '93 Maxima 'round the internet, what would you recommend?

cheap modification? adjust ur timing, remove the stock air box and replace it with an air intake. For suspension, go with intrax springs and KYB struts or tokico blue. But if you want to lower more then go with sprints. BTW, i'm gonna sell my sprints springs and replaced with intrax so if u them, make me an offer. thanks

what about eibach?

Before you start any "mods", start doing preventable maintenance. Fix/ replace any problems you have or any parts that are prone to fail if you have relatively high miles and most of the parts are original. I assume you've got your timing belt. water pump, tensioner taken care of...suspension and steering components are in good condition...etc. If you have an original tranny
= high miles, start saving for a rebuild. No use forking out all your cash for mods and then having basic maintenance issues later. I speak from previous experience.

oh, well maybe we should re-invent the sticky, with a full list stuff, from simplest to hardest???? Just a thought, like list starting with pop charger and ending with full engine rebuild. just a thought.

Okay, thanks guys. I'll consider replacing some old parts before I do anything!
Anyway, we're getting the alternator replaced Monday, and I plan on replacing the brakes/rotors/calipers etc. What b/r/c parts do you recommend for my 3rd gen. GXE?

any particular reason why you want to replace the calipers? Brembo blanks for rotors and axxis metal master I believe are favs here on the org.

No real reason to replace the calipers. Just a thought. Anyway, I was told that I should replace my air box with an air intake, what do you recommend? (sorry 'bout all the questions!)

Intake will increase hp by about 5-8 CAI (cold air intake) will inrease it around 10-15. These are all just estimates so don't hold my ranges too seriously.

Warspeed, you can even do the hybrid approach which is to use a 90-93 Accord's CAI. It will be a HAI for the VG but it is an intake. You can get it from ebay. Look for the Bomz CAI for the 90-93 Accord.

Also, as for the rear brakes, I have drum brakes, not disc brakes. I can't really find any drum brake replacements...

Hey! Drums rock! We never have to wash our rear wheels because of brake dust! So what if our cars don't stop. At least they are clean!

edit - it's kind of a big project to convert to disc. You need to remove the rear struts and replace them with SE struts... So you're gonna need spring compressors and everything. There is a link to a writeup somewhere, I forget where but I'm sure somebody will give you the link.

Well, It seems that it would be easier to have an SE and install the GXE luxuries than to have a GXE and install SE performance... Oh well, the rear disc brakes look like a good idea, they do come stock on the SE right?

Actually it would be quite a bit harder to install the GXE goodies. ie.. touch keypads, auto climate controls, electric suspension etc...

Look at what the GXE has that the SE doesn't. Then think about how difficult transfering those systems over to the se.

SE performance? I assume an VG powered se. It's just springs/struts/swaybar. Even the rear disc swap is cake compared to transfering the keypad over.

Yeah, the keypad would be the hardest definitely. But anyway, my main goals are to replace my dashboard(it's got holes in it), and make it perform like the SE although it's not. Also, I plan to change the gauges, but it's not that important.

Well, first I'm planning on installing a hybrid Accord CAI, then I'll be replacing the rear drum brakes with disc brakes(hopefully if I get the money). I'll do other stuff when the time comes. As for the disc brakes, I'll probably be using Axxis Brake Pads for front & rear, and Brembo Replacement Rotors for front & rear also.

Nope, my family has had the car scince new. My grandfather bought it in 94 in victoria BC, then when he lost his liscence for hitting a pedestrian (he had no depth peception). He gave the car to my mother, who drove it across the country to ontario (where it is now) in 1999 where my mom drove it until i got my liscence and now its mine.

I sec on the pics and ill load up what i have (i dont have any rear disk pics but i do have engine bay ones) The rear disk pics will have to wait until my brother gets home with my car.

Canadian is the only part you needed to mention.

All Canada spec 3rd gen Maximas have discs in the back, and I believe they don't have the stupid power seatbelts either. they also have emissions stuff a little more stringent than the regular US-spec maximas, so you might indeed have a problem with the codes.

A question about Brian's site...(if you can answer) For brake pads/rotors/etc. there's also "generic" parts. Would those perform the same as the name-brand parts?
