basically, that means your screwed. You need to get a new cylinder put in which would cost u around the 1000's to get one & get 1 put in. Its happend to me before, except 2 werent workng in mine. U could drive still with 5 cylinders but you would have less power, ALOT less power. SO my advice is to get it fixed if you got the fonds

I understand that, but I was wanting toknow how you replace something that is part of the block? You can replace pistons, mabye a cylinder sleve, but not a cylinder.
Oh my god, the information inside this thread is hurting my eyes!! Put in a new cylinder?? I hope someone was just being a smart-*** here.
Okay from your information, "running on 5 cylinders" means it's only firing on 5 out of 6 cylinders.
Okay since you mention VTCs, you have a 92-94SE correct? If yes, it could be a few things.
1) The coil for that cylinder could be bad.
2) The coil connection for that cylinder could be bad.
3) The spark plug for that cylinder could be bad.
Alternative reasons for running on 5 cylinders. You could have a broken piston ring and the above 3 items are working but no compression or power is being made. Only solution is to replace the piston ring. NOT THE DAMNED CYLINDER!
If you have the vg30 engine sohc:
1) Bad spark plug wire for that cylinder
2) See #3 above.
3) Bad dist cap.
4) Or again, a bad piston ring.

Can VTC problem is causing this?
Thanks

5 cylinder....
hahahahah...I know what u mean. I'm running on 5 cyclinders rt now too, but i know I have a bad fuel injector on cyclinder #4. If I were u I would do a compression test on each cyclinder before u go ripp'n apart ur engine. I know my cyclinders should be up around 190 psi but not sure on the VG30DE's.
Also check for spark at the wire. I checked all of those and it definitely turns out that the fuel injector is dead. Good luck!

Sorry for the miss information, The piston, the rod bearing, or the camshaft in the cylinder are most probably broken in the cylinder. What i meant as replaceing it was by opening up the engine, opening the valve, and replacing the piston and/or the bearing rod. Atleast this is what had happened in my max. And what i meant by getting the engine fix was, taking it to a auto body shop & getting it fixed or to the nissan dealership, sorry for the miss information

My 92SE was running on 5 cylinders a couple of weeks ago (lugging from a stop and shuddering as you accelerate and really bad gas mileage). Had it checked at dealer and they said it was a bad fuel injector... cost $512 installed (ahhh!) Anyway, had it done and the problem disappeared.
