Well that depends on the brand (some mix differently) and type of paint you are using.
For an example PPG base is mixed 1:1 with reducer. So typically you will need 2 quarts of color to be mixed with 2 quarts of reducer and make a gallon. That would be plenty of paint unless you are painting under the hood, trunk, door jambs etc.
Not all paint is mixed 1:1 though. Some are mixed differently.
For clear I would get at least a gallon or so...also depending on how many coats and how it is mixed.
Same applies to single stage paints too. It just depends on the ratio it is mixed at.
Another contributer is color. If you are painting over a dark color with a light color it will take more to cover. The best thing to do is use a sealer that is close to the same color which will help lessen the coats of paint.
If you are having it done by someone else though I wouldnt worry about it and let the professionals do their job. They know how much paint to use.
good luck.

thanks that helps, i was going to leave most of the details to the guys in the paint booth(they usually paint parts for fire trucks, so i trust their judgement) but i wanted to get some info just to be informed as for what to expect.
