dangit...more brake problems
#1
Well about a week ago I had my master cylinder fixed, as the mechanic said it was leaking severely and that was probably the reason why my brakes were squeaking. Now I am still squeaking a lot when I stop, and when driving slow (about 10 mph) you can hear a rythmic squeak like every second, like there is one stop on the brakes that makes the noise while the wheel rotates or somehting (this is just driving-not braking). I know that noise is the brakes because when brakes are applied it stops. Any idea what this problem is? Should I just takr this right back to the mechanic?
thanks,
PJ

I just had my brakes changed because they were squeaking. The old pads were not even close to the wear indicators. The squeaking stopped for a week or so, with the new pads, then returned. My brakes squeak when they are applied. I can't figure out what the problem is.

yes, i was thinking pads also!
but when I took it into my mechanic, he said they had about 50% of pad life left on them? Think it's time to take it in and let him take a little listen to the noise then tell me whats up?

I had that problem with cheap semimettalic brake pads.... They would squeak all the time. Since I don't normally use my brakes very heavy, I went back to the OEM pads and I like the results. If you are putting performance pads on, chances are that they will always squeak, its just the nature of the beast, and you will have to live with it and know that you can stop faster and fade freer than the rest of us!!
I used Nissan OEM pads, I don't believe in the pads you buy at the parts store......

thats the result of non-factory pads ? damn..
I have the same annoying problem .. how good would you say OEM pads perform? Another question is my mechanic forgot to connect the hand-brake to the rear brakes..how easy is it to do this ?

The master cylinder has nothing to do w/ squeaky brakes but if it was leaking, it needed changing anyway.
Squeaking brakes defination: When you step on the brakes, the pads touch the rotor and slow the car down(duh!) But often items(90%), the rotor is not 100% flat. What happens is that the pads actually vibrate. Now it's this vibration is what you are hearing(high frequency vibration = squeak)The pads are either vibrating against the tabs in the caliper that center the pad or against the piston.
Solution: make sure the brake pad installation includes the Nissan brake shims. Make sure you use some brake quiet on the pad backings. And make sure the caliper brake locating slots are clean and that the pads slide freely in them. You could also consider lubing the brake caliper slide pins also.

OEM will not squeak... if installed properly!
Another suggestion if you don't want to use 3rd gen replacement OEM stuff, you can upgrade rotors and pads to 4th gen. I have, and can tell the difference. Kaleb was the first one with this idea and has a writeup somewhere, and it even gives the part number for ordering...

try some porterfields. i never heard a peep out of them. it's more on the brake job. if the brakes were improperly serviced then you'll squeak like a school bus.
you don't have to deal with it. quality aftermarket pads don't squeak and they fade less. for less $$ try Bendix IQ...also stops very well w/o squeaking.
