Y-Pipe Installed

Hi,

I need to replace my Y-pipe -- its been leaking for the past 1wk, and the noise is just atrocious, and I don't know what further damage i can cause. Mechanics claimed they can't weld it because the main pipe is too rusted

1. I can order a warspeed Y-pipe for $160 shipped (or for approx $190 if i want faster delivery - days).

How much would I have to pay in MD area to have this installed... do i need any other parts, etc?

2. I can have a local mechanic install one for 370 parts and labor.

Power gain is not a problem for me since my car is probably on its last legs (240K miles), and I'm not sure how long I would keep it.

Any thoughts..

call around and ask some local shops
I tried to install mine, but the bolts on the catalytic converter were too rusted to even move, so I took it to a shop with some good air tools and they did it for $50

I went to two different muffler shops and they each quoted me about $50 for the labor. It is a job that takes under an hour for someone with a lift and experience with exhaust work. There are only 8 bolts and three gaskets to replace. You could do it yourself in probably a couple hours if you have jack stands and some decent tools (if you have air tools, it will be way faster and easier).

I ended up findiing a guy with a lift to help me out with it. I was supposed to give him $20 for the use of the lift, but he was in a good mood and I brought some beer and he did most of the work. He also took my $20 and used part of that to buy the gaskets (that was only about $7-8 or something).

The WSP one is going to be better for you any way you look at it. It is going to be quite a bit cheaper. It is also going to give you better power and better fuel economy.

If you call around to some muffler shops, you will find someone that will install it cheaper than the price you were quoted. I think the OEM y-pipe runs around $250-$300 or more at most parts shops.

i will place the order tomorrow, and hopefully, it will get here by tuesday next week.

what do i need to tell the shops when i call: that we need to replace 8 bolts and 3 gaskets, and that it is an aftermarket pipe?

Do i ask Dallas at Wspeed to include the bolts and the gaskets?

Is there any risk the cat converters will be damaged during the install?

I heard somewhere that there is an initial noise or problem with the Y-pipes, and there is a fix for it...do you know about this noise.

thanks for your attention..

wsp will include new gaskets, but not hardware. You can usually reuse the stock nuts/bolts.

Just call and tell them you have a Y pipe that you want to install - if they're not familiar with that, explain that it's the pipe between each exhaust manifold and the cat.

There shouldn't be any problem with damaging the cat during install.

There was a problem with Cattman Y pipes having a "bees in a can" buzzing, but I haven't heard of these problems with WSP. I have had a WSP Y for several years and no regrets at all

Sorry to jack the thread......

quick question craig,
with the wsp y-pipe did you notice a loss of low-end power? or did you feel an even gain in power through out the powerband?
i had a y-pipe custom built for my car last summer. in my opinion i had the diameter of the pipe made too big. i picked up lots of high-end power but i definately lost power in the low end. the two down sections were 2.25" and the collector before my cat is 2.5"
i'd like to get my y rebuillt to a smaller size if indeed i will find a happy medium between low end and high end gains.
do you know the diameter through out the wsp y-pipe? i heard it was mostly 2"

i guess i'll keep going,

i run a 2.5" pipe from my catback. is that the best size for performance or did i go too big?

oh yeah...this is for a vg30e

thanx

once again sorry for thread jacking...

its really easy to install them... i did it yesturday w/ my friend on my car in his driveway.

for the VE (prolly not too different for the VG) youll need

10mm for taking off heat shield around where y pipe and exhaust mani meet
14mm to take bolts off of exhaust manifold
16mm to take off of cat
17mm to take out o2 sensor
jack stand of course

the only thing that got alittle broken was the hanger for the cat, it was just SUPER rusty so i cracked but is still holding up

blah blah blah
I didn't notice any loss of power at all. It's been a couple years now so I can't remember exactly where the gains are though but I remember it was definitely noticeable and worth it.
I dont know about the diameter of the Y. I'm sure you could call up WSP and they'd be happy to tell you. I dont know much about ideal sizing either, sorry
