annoying rattle in my engine

i posted this in the wrong forum last night, i was kinda tired and didn't pay attention. Anyways.

When my car is running you can hear something rattling, it sounds like a bead or something is just bouncing around in my car, it never stops. It does get quieter when you put it in nuetral, but in drive or reverse its louder. I know its not my cat converter. My dad thinks it may be a bad exhaust flange gasket. I think it might be my manifold (i pray its not). Anyone else had this annyoing problem??

does it sound like clicking in the engine somewhere. If so, its you vtc's and you can check the faq's to learn how to fix that.

i'm not sure, it never goes away, like when i rev. it it still makes the noise. its not really a clicking noise i think. Imagine taking a bead, putting it in a plastic cup and shaking it.....sucky analogy

Yeah, the 1990 maxima VTCs were the worst out there. Better fix them asap

Hi,

if the rattling is coming from the side it could be the timing belt or the underpully or sprocket or camshaftrocket,

it could be other things that is causing the rattling,

can you please tell us where the rattling sound is comming from?

inside the engine or outside the engine,

the 92-94 Se only had the vtc,

the 89-91 se and the timing belt

the 89-94 gxe also had the timing belt,

A vague rattling could be anything, but in my 91, there was a bearing sound, which was the water pump ready to give. Bearings give more of a "scrape-ish" sound when they're going bad though.

The second rattling sound is coming from my awful Y-pipe, which will rattle on it's own if you hit it with a hammer or something. Soon I'll be in the market for a Warpspeed Y-pipe, but before that, I'm going to work on redoing in the brakes...I can deal with the rattling a little longer.

2 words...

HEAT SHIELDS

when the engine is off...shake the exhaust..use a long screwdriver and tap around the head sheilds. if it rattles or rings then you know you have rotted heat shields.

c'mon people...focusss..
you're telling a guy to rip open 1/2 his motor for a light rattle? don't always go the most complicated route...always go the cheap route and work your way up.
