changing my brakes on my 91 GXE

I was wondering if any of you knew of an online guide so I wouldn't have to go out and buy a haynes manual. I would have used the search button to look around but I couldn't (so don't flame me pls.). I haven't done this before and I was wondering the level of difficulty. On my old subaru my dad would change the brakes on it so I know he should have the tools in his garage. And yes you could consider me a "noob" at this. I mainly want to do this myself because I have no money right now and don't want to pay someone labor if I think I have a change of doing it myself. (I'm a poor college student who commutes) The front left has been squeaking and the back right drum brake has been kinda thumping when I stop (it might be lopsided or something). These are not abx brakes, just disc and drum. Any advice is appreciated..

Thanks,
Josh

It's pretty easy...take the wheel off....find the screw behind the caliper (i'm not sure if you have to remove the caliper when i did mine i did the rotors as well so i had to) and you remove the two bolts and lift up the caliper.....and the brake pads are in there w/ splints you popt those out with the pad and you put new pads in with the splints and they pop in and your done.....sorry if i'm being vague but it's pretty simple once you get down in there and look.

thats for the front

rear : I'm not sure i have disks all around

cool that sounds good, makes me feel a little better that it won't be too hard. I found like 3 links to guides on it but only 1 of them still worked, damn broken links

http://www.mattblehm.com/faq/brake%2...0procedure.txt

So i'm going to print that out and maybe pick up the Haynes manual and see what I can do with it tomorrow, because I really don't want to pay to have this stuff fixed, and I hope i didn't wait too long. About 4 years ago I was leaving my high school and I put my car in reverse and I heard a CLANK. I was like WTF just fell off of my car, and the front left pad had just fallen off LOL. I still drove it though which was stupid, and added more **** to be repaired, I hope I only have to replace the pads.

As far as Drum brakes go, they're still easy, but a little time consuming compared to disc. take the drum off and look at the brakes, it will become self evident. You can buy special tools at any parts store for the springs and retainers, and the adjuster too. But, if you don't want to spend the extra $30, a Flat head screwdriver, needle nose pliers, and some muscle will get the job done too. I would suggest you do one side at a time, so you have a reference when re-assembling the brakes. Once you have it all together, put the wheel back on and crawl under the car and pull the little rubber plug out of the backing plate. Stick your flathead or adjusting tool in there and spin the wheel. Adjust the brakes until you feel a slight drag on the spinning wheel. You're done! It will all be evident as soon as you look at the setup.

The fronts are easy. Hope that helps!

thanks guys just got it done. Didn't change the rear ones bc they didn't need it, even though one was making a noise.

Front ones needed it, although the front left was worn more than the right, and one of the pads was "sorta" lopsidedish... That's probably bad right? The roter didn't look uneven at all.

But I put the new pads on and I'm waiting to put the wheels back on, it started storming

thanks again,
josh
