Splash Shields... can we run without them?

Found out yesterday, after driving around for the better part of the day, that the splash guard on my front right was almost completely off. I tried to pull the rest of it off, but it seems to be still held down, probably by a lower screw.

I haven't had the opportunity to jack up the car & remove it yet since it's been forecast to rain for almost the entire week, but when I do, is it a necessity to have it replaced? I can see the UDP is exposed now, along with the belts, so I'm leaning toward this being a necessary part or else water or debris would get into contact with the belts, causing either looseness or tears.

I wold think that they are called splash shields so that we won't splash water onto our alternator. As well as your suggestion.

i've been running without mine for a couple years or so now. only thing that really happens is you engine bay can get real dirty and if you run over something that likes to squirt blood it might get all over the engine and such underneath.

even with the splash shields the alternators aren't totally sealed from getting any water on them. they should be able to handle some splashes but may not handle being submerged. i could be wrong though.

Mine was missing when I bought the car last September. I have no idea how the heck the previous owner broke it off. Didn't have a problem until a slushy day in the winter. Every time I went through a puddle of slush (and there were lots that day) there was a horrible squealing from the belts as slush/water sprayed all over the belts and pulleys. Anyway, it was around $50 CDN for a new one (I guess a wrecker would be cheaper, but I didn't feel like crawling around in the cold and slush).
