good power wire?

This girl gave me some radar detector that is a top of line brand, but not up to date (Beltronics). Anyways, I am going to get a newer one soon, but until then I am going to set this one up and see how it works. When she had it wired, whoever wired it cut off the end where it would plug into the lighter and instead wired it to some power wire underneath her fuse box. Since there is no plug, I must do the samething or something like it, so I need to know where the best place to grab and connect it to any power wire around that side of the car. I am going to mount it right on top of the hump above the gauges.

Does that mean leach off the cigarette lighter or are you asking where to plug it in (mind you being that the plug that plugs into the cigarette lighter is cut off)?

leach off the cigarette lighter.
That way it will also be a switched power source

Or, you could just go to Radio Shack and get a new cig plug and re-wire it. That way it's easily removable.

Until my Maxima, all my cars have been from American auto manufactors. They have all had unswitched (always hot) cig lighter circuits. I was really surprised when I found this one to be a switched power source. Makes it tough to re-charge my phone that way...or to use it for any accessories (aka trouble light) if stranded along the road somewhere.

Anyone know the thinking behind this, why this was done this way by Nissan? Is this common to all Nissan autos or all Japanese autos in general?

I don't suppose it would take too much effort to re-wire this to a constant power source??
