POLL: rebuilt tranny or used one?

the pump for my tranny is possibly going out but not for sure. (my tranny is constantly shifting from D to N and from N to D every 6 or 7 seconds) My local trans. shop gave me 2 options: rebuild my trans. for $1400 ( I honestly don't trust rebuilt trannys), or get a fairly used trans for about $650-$700.
I will be installing my own trans but i need some advice as to what way to follow. I am already heading in the direction of a used tranny; but I always like second opinions.

If you get a used one, make sure you get a warranty with it

if you're keeping the car i do with rebuilt.

if u want to sell it (soon) go for the used.

used tranny may have warranty...but does it mean that it's going to work? u don't know the true mileage of it..and u think bone yards are honest w/ mileage?

i'm planning on keeping it for at least forever. this will be the first car that i've actually owned. I honestly never heard anything good about rebuilt FRONT wheel drive automatic trannys.
And plus, i honestly don't want to drop that much money at once into my car. I feel uncomfortable.

ok...if you're not confident with your rebuilder then i would find one that you're comfortable with. there are few out there...just gotta find them.

only problem is rebuilds cost $$$$...many are not willing to lay out the $ for a "good" rebuild..so what ends up happening is they have to cheap on a few items and in the end you get a sloppy rebuild. Jeff at maximum tuning in NY does a bullet proof rebuild for $2500..are you willing to lay that much out? (this is w/o TC). in the end you'll probably have to lay out 3K for a bullet proof rebuild...PLUS install labor. i'm sure you don't NEED a bullet proof one...but a beefed up good rebuild would probably run u a 2K...willing to spend that?

going back on topic...if you want the used one then go for it. i'm going to assume warranty is 3 months...MAYBE you can find a place that can do 6months. so that's 600 paid...what happens after the warranty is out? do u pay another $600 for another questionable one?

what about down time? can u afford to go w/o the car for a few days while the car is down? is it easy to locate a good used tranny?

don't be penny wise and dollar foolish. just trying to save u some headaches...but it's your car and $..you make the call.

If you can afford it get a jasper unit, IIRC they come with a 3 yr Parts and labor warranty.
