Is it possible to remove the tranny from my 89 Maxima without pulling the engine.

yes,
remove the driveshafts, unplug the sensors, unbolt the tranny mounts, unbolt the tranny from the engine and you're set. well, that's a simple explanation at least. it's not that hard.

5 spd is easier.
auto is a tight fit.

make sure you strap down/support the engine or it's going to break something when the weight goes off it.

its usually easiest to put a jack under there with a board between the jack and oil pan. i prefer the screw jack supplied with the car since it can't "leak" like the hydraulic jacks can. if i remember correctly the jack needs to go on the belt side of the engine, under the oil pan.

yes you can. I'm actually quite a pro at it by now. i've taken my tranny in and out 4 times within the past month. I can have my tranny out and then back in again in just over 4 hours (thanx to air tools and a lift at my work). I just installed my new tranny since I blew the other one up by doing the drop resistor mod. e-mail me if you have any questions.
