I was curious as of which transmission can be built up stronger. I want to put a 5-speed in my car but if its possible for the automatic to stand up to more power I'll keep it. As of now which transmission do they make the most strenghthening upgrades for. Thanks

92GXE, touring wing, 18” racing wheels, Port&Polished intake, custom intake, custom yellow interior, racing seats, back seats taken out and replaced with subs and amps, NOS kit, Suspension tech. Lowering springs, custom grille, soon to be custom painted and have the whole engine rebuilt for big shot NOS and custom SC and tranny converted to 5-speed.

I assume.....

That the 5 speed manual is stronger, but others might dissagree.... Don in Texas got NOS, and his is an auto, with valve body upgrade and tranny cooler, an auto can last a while, what you can also do is get a heavy duty automatic tranny rebuilt, which will run you mad $$$, maybe 3-4 grand, but it will hold up to 400+ horsepower, which you probably won't reach but still.... http://www.level10.com makes performance transmissions. You can most likely get a heavy duty manual tranny as well, but in stock form, I would bet manuals are stronger..... My freakin auto completely died at 86k miles! got the rebuilt for 1,200$, now it feels fishy again, and I only drove another 5-6k miles!
Auto Tranny is a prob in the 3rd gens, it depends on your driving style though.

I've been told the conversion isn't worth doing (?) I don't know, I'd do it if its as much as I would pay for an auto rebuilt, if not... its not really worth it.

Cheapest and most reliable way to do this swap is to swap cars.

However, here is the homepage for need4power, he did the swap.

Tranny Swap

Well, i'm gonna tell you what i told everyone who asked me. I would only suggest it if you have a lot of work done to your car, like I did. I converted it to a 5-spd, but i had to find all the parts from various junkyards. The parts alone cost about $1800 and the labor ran $700 because i knew the guy. The car right now is holding up. I have a Clutchmasters stage III clutch in it. I get a nice squeel out of the tires when i shift to second. Even though it took a while to convert and $$, I only recommend you doing it if your attached to your car. (Don't be supprised if you have problems after you convert it) I did, but know it's running fine.

Dont we get this question enough now? But to answer your question it takes about 1-5 days depending on skill and time per day. It also costs more than an auto rebuild.

But does it cost more than buying a totaled 5spd car and doing it yourself? I can't imagine paying more than $1000 for a wrecked SE 5spd... A bit of my time, a new clutch disk, presure plate, throw out bearing, pilot bearing... It just seems like if you were to do this yourself and find a wrecked car... that it could be done for well less than the price of a rebuilt auto.

Am I totally off base here?

Take care,

This question doesn't matter to me anymore because I bought a 95 SE 5 speed and sold my 92 SE auto.

There is a shop here in So.Cal that has done the swap to a Max before. I plan on having it done sometime next year. It was $2200 out the door with fluids, parts, labor etc...And that is all brand new stuff.
