Overheating, then fine?

So I was driving about 50mph, maybe 10 minutes from home. I looked down at the gauges and OMGWTFBBQ the temp gauge is near the H. I pulled over and shut it off, then popped the hood. Steam was bubbling from the coolant tank, so I dont think it was a gauge or sensor problem. I checked to see if the waterpump/power steering belt was still on, it was. After several minutes I started it up and turned on the heater full blast. It was still hot, but within operating range and seemed to be holding steady. I started driving back home and it stayed in the upper 1/4 of the temp gauge, then went back down to normal after a few minutes. It was normal the rest of the way back home (5-10 minutes).

Any idea what's wrong?

T-stat, radiator fan motor, clogged radiator.
Too many options to cover without actaully being able to check them in person
