'90 auto trans -> annoying whine

I have a '90 GXE with an automatic transmission. The tranny has an annoying whine when in drive, e.g., stopped but in drive, and especially when accelerating from a stop. I don't notice it at higher speeds, but I'm certain it is just getting drowned out by wind noise, etc. The annoying whine goes away instantly when shifted into park or neutral.

otherwise, it runs great, shifts smoothly, etc.

Any ideas what the problem is ?

thanks, john c.

You do realize that they sell rebuilt transmissions for about $450 less than that?

please tell us where to get the inexpensive rebuilts ... just in case this whine we are experiencing is a precursor to the tranny not working at all... --- thanks, john c.
