A/T or performance issue?

Ok, here is the situation. I cruise on a highway at about 140 km/h (85-90 mph). Tranny is in OD, RPMs about 3K. I'm trying to increase speed by depressing accelerator _slightly_ but RPMs are not going up. I depress it more to no effect. Finaly tranny downshifts to 3rd and I get power.
If I push hard on accelerator then tranny just downshifts quicker.
But in any case I haven't seen my RPMs going over 3K in OD. Is it normal?
And if it's not then do you guys think it's tranny issue or some kind of performance problem?

Does you car go faster when you press on the gas more? When the tranny is in OD and the converter is locked it won't rev up like in other gears. The RPM's will move only if the car goes faster.

No, it doesn't go faster when I press on the gas until tranny downshifts. And when it downshifts then rpms are up and I'm gaining the speed.

Excuse me my ignorance but what is it about converter locking? Is it what they call lock-up mode in FSM? What is it? Is there any place I can read about this mode?

Hi,

when you have O/D off you don't have the 4 gear that way your rpm doesn't go up to 3,000 or above and the O/D is locking out the fourth gear,

so if you want 4 gear to cruise on the freeway then turn O/D on then you can go above 3,000 and get better response,

OD is on. And it works becuase I definitely feel that tranny downshifts when I turn it off.

You will get a pretty decent explanation from this site:

O/D - http://auto.howstuffworks.com/automa...nsmission8.htm
Torque Converter - http://auto.howstuffworks.com/torque-converter.htm

But you should prob read the whole thing on auto tranny's to better understand how they work.

Thanks alpicone,
I feel stupid for not looking at that site earlier.

So if we presume that converter is in lock-up mode at that moment then that means that there is no more power transferred from the engine because speed is not going up. Right?

I think you have it backwards (or my car is backwards). When the O/D switch is OFF and I don't have 4th gear, my rpms will be higher. When the O/D is on, and I once again get 4th gear and lock up, my rpms will go down as I'm in a higher gear.
