HID Questions

First of all would like to say to hello to everyone. I just picked up my Maxima today. It's a 94 GXE with 160k Charcoal grey inside & out to be used as a daily driver. Please forgive my ignorance, because I haven't quite mastered the Search function. Moving on.... This evening I put in a pair of Sylvania SilverStar bulbs and I like the clearer light, but I'd like to upgrade to a HID conversion for clearer and more efficient lighting. I've seen a few on Ebay from McCullough and others for a reasonable price. Has any ever used one of these type kits? I've noticed that they are rated @ 35 for the low beam. Will this give me ample lighting? I've also seen the E-36 lights. Can these be used with the E-36's? Do all of the E-36's have projectors? I've seen some E-36 that look different than others, with halo's, clear lense, etc. What would be a good combination to give me the best/clearest lighting? I am planning to upgrade the wiring harness. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Jason

Spipedong90 had HIDs in his stock housings and the lighting was very impressive. IIRC, he had to adjust them to point down and his had no high beams.

I think he just put in a kit designed for the same bulb as our stock lights, but you would have to ask him.

Are there any HID's that incorporate a high beam? Better yet, if I use the E-36's, don't they have a seperate high beam bulb?

HID systems with the hi beams are about double the price. I have 7500k's in my max and they light up the road great, the beam pattern is wonderfull or anything but its decent, much better lighting than stock.

If you pm D-sta he can give you the info on where to buy them since I got mine through him.

Thanks for the replies, by the way. As far as the E-36's, is there a specific type or style to look for? I mean as far as year range, US spec, etc. What mods would need to be done to it to get it to work? Will these work with the HID's? I already figured that I would need to update the wiring harness, so that shouldn't be a problem.

go to ebay or one of the bimmer forums. There are tons of different E36 set ups. US, Euro, projectors, non-projectors, angel eyes, etc...

The E36s do have a seperate high beam. They have two sets of lights.

I'm putting some e36's in my Max, they are the euro/projector style (glass housing/euro cut-off)...here are some pics: http://community.webshots.com/user/dmad8724

They are bigger than the US-Spec e36s (also harder to install), but the beam pattern and glass housing justify that enough for me..

I have H1 Silverstars in there now (only been testing the wiring/beam pattern, havn't started installing them yet; check out my thread http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=341622). But, the metal base of one of my silverstars looks like it's burnt (still works, though). I just ordered some H1 XD5 bulbs off of ebay, recommended to me by Chris (Red92MaxSE). I'm not sure if you entirely need HIDs, just get some e36s (US-Spec or projectors) and some better bulbs.

What style build should I go with? I have the Silverstar's already and they seem to be much clearer than stock, but not quite as bright. I'm gathering that I'll have to switch to the H1 bulb. Is that plug & play or can I just switch a few wires around when I upgrade my harness? Off topic..... I noticed that you are from Waterloo, I am originally from the Davenport / Quadcity area. I moved here around 5 years ago.

Not too sure what you're asking for...as to what model (if e36's is what you're talking about) that's up to you, the projectors I have use H1 bulbs, I'm not sure what other types of e36's use...you'll have to ask the other guys..

Just retrofit a pair of projectors in the E36 housings, they are perfect for it. You can find projectors + the oem hid kit along with it fairly cheap. My whole setup cost me Less than $400 (That includes tools I had to buy to do the project).

What tools do you need? I have basic hand tools along with a dremmel and a few grinders and files. Is there anything else that I would need? I asked about the year range, but I realized that the E36's was the type that I need for the 90's 3 series Bimmer. What's involved with the wiring for the oem HID's? That means switching my 9004's over to H1 bulbs, right? I've seen threads where people swap in a 9007 bulb. Is it a similar proceedure or just plug & play?
