Seeing discharges through a coil pack?

I just changed out my spark plugs not long ago. Everything went smoothly, but as I was checking things in they dying light (engine running) I noticed a little bit of light being emitted from the top of the coil pack on cylinder 5 (rear driver's side). It was not arcing, but just dim flashes that seemed to be coming from inside the coil. Very strange. When I had the rear coils out it seemed like the tops of them were filled with some kind of resin or polymer just below the connector.... am I just seeing the coil do it's thing through this filling, or should I plan on getting a new coil sometime in the future?

The other rear coils don't seem to do this, the car runs and idles fine, and number 5 plug did not show any signs of fouling or misfiring. All coils seemed perfectly healthy, as did all the plugs aside from being pretty worn out.

It's probably cracked. Looks like it's leaking voltage out the top.

Thanks Jeff. That's a bummer... you mean it's cracked (or otherwise damaged) internally maybe? It looked fine on the outside.

There might be a crack you can't see. But it's clear that there is some type of leak out of the top of the coil. I know Chris (RedMax92se) has some spares.

easy thing to do is take some electrical tape and wrap it around the coil pack

might work and it'll only cost you $2 for the tape so why not

Okay, I'll try that and see if the (internal) arcing goes away.

Jeff, you think those JDM coil packs Red92MaxSE has would be okay to use?

Thanks guys.

I don't know which ones he's using. I started the car with the JDM units. I used them because I figured, if they worked, they would have alot less miles on them than the ones on this old motor. Both seem to work fine. I had no problem going triple digits on the shakedown run.

Ha, nevermind anyway. I RE-read his FS thread, and it seems like he's keeping all his packs from what it sounds like, and currently using his JDMs.

you ever try using electrical tape around the packs yet? how did it work out? I was planning on wrapping my coil packs tight with electrical tape because i have a problem where my car "humps" while giving it gas, and sometimes it will just die. maybe i got a small crack in one of my coil packs?

No, sorry, not yet. I have "bigger fish to fry" but I will have to take my FSTB off again soon anyway, so I'll try and tape it up this week and see if that helps. My car possibly won't be in running condition again for a week though...
