Dash temp gauge

Hey guys, Question for you. The gauge in my cluster for the engine temprature doesn't seem to be working right. Most of the time it's not showing the temprature but every now and then it will come on showing the engine temp is just fine. Any ideas on what the problem is? I tested the thermestat with the instructions via the holy hayes manual and it seems to be fine. Do I have a loose connection somewhere? if so where would it be?
