99/98 Infiniti I30 or Maxima SE-Auto

Hi,

I took a drive with a friend this evening... and checked out two good cars -

If I have to make a purchase, I would consider getting a 4th Gen (98/99) Infiniti I30 (LE) or Maxima (SE-Auto). Can you give me the relative pros and cons of one over the other.

The Infiniti is about 89K and the maxima about 70K.

Both cost around 12K with some Baltimore area dealers.

cheers - Noela

its more of a preference thing, no one can tell you what you like. drive em and pick the one you like better. agreed 12k is steep.

The I30 and Maxima are basically the same car mechanically. Just differ in front fasica, rear fascia, bumpers, dash, and steering wheel. I think the I30 is tuned with a softer suspension.
12K is a too much IMHO. If for no other reason than '97 Maximas with ~70k miles are 7-8 grand.
The pro of an I30 is that it is a fully loaded car for the most part-which is nice when buying used. Most have automatic/leather/Bose/electronic climate control. I bet ABS was standard. Plus an I30 buyer is probably older and more conservative and probably didn't drive the car as hard as a Maxima driver. I think the
The Pro of the Maxima is that the styling, especially on the SE is better looking/sportier. There is also the option of a 5 speed. Equipment can vary from GXEs with tape players and PW/PL, to fully optioned GLEs or SEs with the I30 features. ABS and side airbags seem rare on '98-99s. Of course less extras are less parts to break.
I wouldn't go over $9-10K on a 98 Maxima with 70K. For that money, I'd want 50K miles, though you may have to look for a lower mile car. The I30 and Maxima are very good cars, but the Accord LX V6 '98+, or Camry V6 '97+ deserve a look. Buy the best deal.

you know whats funny?

remember when Maximan's supercharger wasnt working?
remember when he went to the Northwest Import Challenge?
remember when I, antonthegrey, in my 89 SE 5-sp beat him?

Maximan: 16.4xx
antonthegrey: 16.2xx

Maximan: tons of bolt ons
antonthegrey: piggy intake and hacked off muffler.

Get a VG 5-sp. Pwn an automatic VQ.

Yeah, but he just removed the S/C, and was still running the JWT with S/C programming. If he just put in a stock ECU, he would of been back in the 15.1-15.3 range where he was before going boost. Your VG pwned on a technicality, not because the VQ his car was inferior.

Wow. You beat a car with 110hp at the wheel with 200lbs in the trunk from my slicks and his suspension he was getting ready to install.

Shawn's a winner!

The other day I went to an elementary school and punched an overweight retarded kid in the face. Man I pwned him.

Come on Anton, I don't think a VG 5-sp could "kill" a VQ auto if it was even running within 20hp of what it's supposed to. VQs will dyno at 165-ish at the wheels. That's more than you have at the flywheel. So I wouldn't really base your recommendation on a very set of circumstances.
