found my '91

alright well 4 1/2 years after totalling my mom's pearl 91 se 5 speed, i've found an identical one with 3,000 less miles than my mom's had on it in feb. of 2000. that's a grand total of just under 88,000 miles! the stereo when turned on produces a blaring sound on the right channel and the left channel doesn't work at all. i've read a little about the amps blowing or whatnot on a lot of these 3rd gen maximas but my mom's never had any problems. i'm a little worried about the left channel being completely dead and hoping it's not a wiring problem because i didn't have any intentions on keeping the stock deck or speakers anyway so as long as it's not the wiring, i don't really care. what specificly are the problems the stock stereos are prone to? is the fault in each speaker's amp or the deck? also, due to my last cars cooling fan problems (not turning on) i'm paranoid about that and the first thing i did when test driving the car was drive a few blocks home, pull in my shady driveway, pop the hood and wait for the fan(s) to move but they never did. i kept checking the temp guage and it never got past about 40% and at one point, even dropped a little from the time i checked before yet neither fan ever came on. i'm hoping it's just that the coolant never got hot enough the switch the fans on when should the auxillary fan come on? and should it come on when the car is only idling in a shady spot in 70 degree weather? i had it running for maybe 5-7 minutes and the thing never switched on of course the temp guage never went over ~40% like i said. still excited though...88,000 on a 91!

88k! About your radio problems, get rid of it the bose systems are not worth all the trouble. I tried to "keep it stock" for a while, but quickly realized that the bose is junk. With just 88k on it your cooling system should be in excellent condition. As long as the needle is not going north of half way i would not worry. But if you want to see your fans work turn on your a/c.

thanks for the reply. i wasn't going to keep the deck or speakers stock but i would like to have the idividual amps working for each speaker..i was just wondering what the usual symptoms of the amp failure is and if the loud, blaring sounds that come out is the norm when the amps go out and maybe if my whole left channel being silent is common too. pretty much i'm paranoid about electrical problems. the last car i had was an electrical nightmare, temp guage read inaccurate, cooling fan never came on, and the alternator wouldn't charge.

i will be inspecting the maxima again tomorrow..compression check, timing belt check and of course making sure the fans come on...before i buy this baby. thanks for the a/c tip. anyway...$2,850. not bad, my mother got 6 thousand something when i totalled hers in 00 and it had 3k more miles:-)
